Electric Power Inverter Converter (G2165128): Operation: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
WARNING: Do not do any work on the High Voltage (HV) electric system until the HV system on the vehicle is powered down.

The Electric Power Inverter Converter (EPIC) communicates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to determine if the Motor Generator (MG) is a motor or a generator. The PCM then informs the EPIC to operate the MG in the required mode.

When the MG is operating as a motor the EPIC uses the power from the PHEV battery. The EPIC provides a high voltage 3-phase Alternating Current (AC) supply to the MG. The EPIC uses the signals from the integral MG position sensors to determine the phasing of the 3-phase AC. The phasing of the 3-phase AC is determined by the torque required by the PCM based on the selected mode of vehicle operation.

When the MG is operating as a generator when regenerative braking. The MG generates a high voltage AC on each of the 3-phases. The EPIC rectifies the high voltage AC from the MG to the high voltage Direct Current (DC) to recharge the PHEV battery.
