Separating Clutch

The separating clutch is located between the engine and the Motor Generator (MG). The separating clutch is a wet, multi plate hydraulic clutch pack.

The separating clutch is controlled by the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The TCM controls the feed of a hydraulic supply to the multi plate hydraulic clutch pack. When hydraulic oil pressure is supplied by the transmission valve block to the separating clutch, the petrol engine is connected to the transmission. The petrol engine can then provide propulsion for the vehicle.

The TCM communicates with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the Electric Power Inverter Converter via FlexRay.

The separating clutch disconnects the petrol engine from the transmission when electric power only is selected. This disconnection decreases the losses in electric only mode by separating the petrol engine from the transmission. The petrol engine can then be stopped while in electric only mode to reduce the frictional losses.
