- Remove the engine and ancillaries.

Remove the oil filler cap.
- Remove the 18 bolts.
- Remove the left valve cover.
- Remove and discard the left valve cover gasket.
- Remove and discard the 4 spark plug boss seals.
- Remove the 18 bolts.
- Remove the right valve cover.
- Remove and discard the right valve cover gasket.
- Remove and discard the 4 spark plug boss seals.
- Remove the 13 bolts.
- Remove and discard the engine front cover.
- Remove the 10 bolts.
- Remove the 2 upper timing covers.
Use a suitable plastic scraper to remove the RTV sealant.
Install but do not fully tighten a new crankshaft pulley bolt.
Renew Part: Crankshaft pulley bolts Quantity: 1 .

CAUTION: Only rotate the crankshaft clockwise.
- Install the drive plate.
- Install, but do not fully tighten 10 new bolts.
Renew Part: Drive plate bolts Quantity: 10 .
- Install the special tools as illustrated.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304 , JLR-303-1303
- Tighten the 10 bolts in the illustrated sequence.
Torque
Stage 1: 45 Nm
Stage 2: 90°
Remove and discard the crankshaft pulley bolt.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove and discard the right upper timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove and discard the lower right upper timing chain guide.
Remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove the 2 right Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) actuators and the right timing chain.
- Discard the timing chain.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove and discard the left upper timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove and discard the upper left upper timing chain guide.
Remove the 2 bolts.
Remove the 6 bolts.

CAUTION: Take extra care not to damage the surrounding components.
- Remove the 2 left VCT actuators and the left timing chain.
- Discard the timing chain.
- Remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove and discard the upper right upper timing chain guide.
- Remove and discard the lower left upper timing chain guide.
- Remove and discard the friction washer.
- Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
- Remove and discard the friction washer.
- Remove the special tool.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1303
- Remove and discard the 10 bolts.
- Remove the drive plate.
- Remove the special tool.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1304
- Remove the special tool.
- Remove the 12 bolts.
- Remove and discard the engine rear cover.

CAUTION: Take extra care to avoid damage to the oil evacuation pipe.NOTE: All Wheel Drive (AWD) shown, Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) is similar.
- Remove the 16 bolts.
- Remove the oil pan.
Use a suitable plastic scraper to clean the oil pan mating faces.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove and discard the lower timing chain tensioner.
- Use a suitable tool to hold the oil pump drive sprocket.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove the oil pump drive sprocket.
- Remove the lower timing chain.
- Discard the timing chain.
- Remove the bolt.
- Remove and discard the lower timing chain guide.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the oil pump inlet pipe.
- Remove and discard the O-ring seal.
- Remove the 6 bolts.
- Remove the oil pump and the oil pump outlet pipe.
- Disconnect the oil pump outlet pipe from the oil pump.
- Remove and discard the 2 O-ring seals.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- Remove the 2 timing chain lubrication pipes.
- Remove the crankshaft sprocket.
- Remove and discard the friction washer.
- Remove the 11 bolts.
- Remove the windage tray.

- Remove the 20 bolts.
- Remove the 10 left camshaft bearing caps.

Remove the 2 left camshafts.

- Remove the 20 bolts.
- Remove the 10 right camshaft bearing caps.

Remove the 2 right camshafts.
- Remove the 2 M6 bolts.
- Remove the M8 bolt.
- Use the special tool to remove the 10 M11 bolts.

- With the aid of another technician, remove the left cylinder head.
Remove and discard the left cylinder head gasket.
- Remove the 2 M6 bolts.
- Remove the M8 bolt.
- Use the special tool to remove the 10 M11 bolts.
Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1653
- With the aid of another technician, remove the right cylinder head.
Remove and discard the right cylinder head gasket.

NOTE: Note the installed position of the components before removal.
Remove the 32 valve tappets.
Use a suitable plastic scraper to clean the cylinder head mating surfaces.
