The PHEV battery cooler is located under the floor of the luggage compartment at the rear of the vehicle. The PHEV battery cooler uses the refrigerant from the Air Conditioning (A/C) to cool the PHEV battery coolant in the PHEV battery temperature control system. The PHEV battery coolant is then circulated through the PHEV battery temperature control system to reduce the internal temperature of the PHEV battery.

The isolation valve that controls the flow of refrigerant though the PHEV battery cooler is controlled by the HVAC Control Module. The Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) sends a request to the HVAC. The request is sent on the High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) power mode zero bus to the Body Control Module/Gateway Module (BCM/GWM). The BCM/GWM then send the request via the HS CAN comfort systems bus to the HVAC. The HVAC then activates the following:

The refrigerant from the A/C system can then flow through the PHEV battery cooler to cool the PHEV battery coolant.

The PHEV battery cooler has a Thermostatic Expansion Valve (TXV) that controls the flow refrigerant though the PHEV battery cooler. The TXV automatically controls the flow of refrigerant through the PHEV battery cooler when the PHEV battery cooler isolation valve is open.

The PHEV battery cooler has a 2 pin electrical connector on the isolation valve. The 2 pin connector has the following connections:
