The catalytic converter converts toxic gases and pollutants in the exhaust gas to non toxic and less toxic pollutants by catalyzing an oxidation and a reduction reaction. The catalytic converter attaches to the outlet of the turbocharger. There is a mica gasket between the catalytic converter and the turbocharger. The catalytic converter is secured with a clamp to the turbocharger housing.
Immediately after the clamp the pipe contains a threaded hole for the installation of the pre catalyst Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S). The mid catalyst HO2S is located between the catalytic converter and the Gasoline Particulate Filter (GPF). The post catalyst HO2S is installed in the exhaust system after the GPF.
The GPF traps the particulate matters in the exhaust gas that the petrol engine combustion process produces.
A pressure pipe for the exhaust back-pressure sensor is located between the mid catalyst HO2S and the GPF. The exhaust back-pressure sensor measures the exhaust system pressure and transmits the information to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This is used to prevent excessive pressures in the exhaust gas to minimize the risk of damage to the vehicle.
