Symptom Chart

Symptom Possible Causes Action
Vibration through the vehicle body at a specified speed
  • Road wheel imbalance
  • Rear driveshaft imbalance
  • Front driveshaft imbalance
  • Road test the vehicle. If the vibration is only at a specified speed, balance the road wheels and retest. REFER to: WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY BALANCING
  • Disconnect the rear driveshaft. Check for grease loss from joints. Check plunge of driveshaft joints. Rotate driveshaft by 180 degrees and re-test. Rectify as necessary
  • Disconnect the front driveshaft. Check for grease loss from joints. Check plunge of driveshaft joints. Rectify as necessary
Vibration through the vehicle body at all speeds
  • Rear driveshaft center support bearing damaged or deteriorated
  • Check the center support bearing for damage or deterioration. Rectify as necessary
Rumbling noise from the rear of the vehicle varying at different vehicle speed and load
  • Rear driveshaft center support bearing damaged or deteriorated
  • Rear wheel bearings worn
  • Rear differential bearings worn
  • Road test the vehicle
  • Check the center support bearing for damage or deterioration. Rectify as necessary
  • Using a suitable listening device (for example stethoscope) listen to the rear wheel bearings. Rectify as necessary
  • Using a suitable listening device (for example stethoscope) listen to the rear differential pinion bearings and output bearings. Rectify as necessary
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment run application Noise, vibration and harshness diagnostic test - Rear differential
Knocking, clicking or clunking noise from rear of vehicle during acceleration and overrun conditions
  • Rear driveshaft CV  joints worn or damaged
  • Rear halfshaft hub nut loose
  • Rear halfshaft CV  joints worn or damaged
  • Rear halfshaft outer CV  joints or splined shaft worn or damaged
  • Rear halfshaft inner CV  joint not fully located, splined shaft worn or retaining circlip damaged
  • Rear differential internal components worn or damaged
  • Disconnect the rear driveshaft. Check rear driveshaft joints for grease leak, check joint plunge. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the rear halfshaft hub nut(s) for security. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the rear halfshaft CV  boots for disconnection, damage and water ingress. Rectify as necessary
  • Disconnect the rear halfshafts. Check the rear halfshaft outer CV  joints for lash in the spline and inspect the splines for wear or damage. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the rear halfshaft inner CV  joint is fully located in the differential. Remove the halfshaft and check the inner CV  splines for wear or damage. Check the inner CV  joint retaining circlip for damage. Rectify as necessary
  • With the rear driveshaft and rear halfshafts disconnected check the rear differential for excessive play. Rectify as necessary
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment run application Noise, vibration and harshness diagnostic test - Rear differential
Knocking, clicking or clunking noise from front of vehicle during acceleration and overrun conditions
  • Front driveshaft constant velocity joints worn or damaged
  • Front halfshaft hub nut loose
  • Front halfshaft CV  joints worn or damaged
  • Front halfshaft outer CV  joints or splined shaft worn or damaged
  • Front halfshaft inner CV  joint not fully located, splined shaft worn or retaining circlip damaged
  • Front differential internal components worn or damaged
  • Disconnect the front driveshaft. Check front driveshaft joints for grease leak, check joint plunge. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the front halfshaft hub nut(s) for security. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the front halfshaft CV  boots for disconnection, damage and water ingress. Rectify as necessary
  • Disconnect the front halfshafts. Check the front halfshaft outer CV  joints for lash in the spline and inspect the splines for wear or damage. Rectify as necessary
  • Check the front halfshaft inner CV  joint is fully located in the differential. Remove the halfshaft and check the inner CV  splines for wear or damage. Check the inner CV  joint retaining circlip for damage. Rectify as necessary
  • With the front driveshaft and front halfshafts disconnected check the front differential for excessive play. Rectify as necessary
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment run application Noise, vibration and harshness diagnostic test - Front differential
