Symptom Chart

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
Tailgate latch releases but tailgate does not open
  • Tailgate set/alignment
  • Obstacle detection/Pop and stop
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Low battery voltage
  • Switch failure
  • Tailgate latch does not release
  • No electrical connection/CAN  bus communication
  • Tailgate strut internal failure
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making sure that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
  • Check that the tailgate isn't contacting anything, specifically the lower seal and interior trim, listen for Rear Gate/Trunk Module (RGTM) beeps (3 determines an obstruction). Try to aid opening by releasing and pulling the tailgate past obstacle
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions
  • Check the battery voltage - the tailgate will not power open with low power warning present - 'Low battery' warning indicator in the vehicle Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module (IPC)
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
Tailgate latch releases and lifts but does not open fully
  • Pre programed garage height reached
  • Tailgate set/alignment
  • Obstacle detection
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Low battery voltage
  • Switch failure
  • Tailgate strut internal failure
  • Complete garage height set procedure at uppermost height
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making sure that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
  • Listen for RGTM  beep signal (3 determines an obstruction)
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, check hinge is free moving
  • Check the battery voltage - the tailgate will not power open with low power warning present - 'Low battery' warning indicator in the vehicle IPC
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
Tailgate is in open state but does not move when close requested
  • Tailgate set/alignment - Struts have not met hall count target while opening (unknown position)
  • Anti-trap sensor failure
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Latch incorrect state
  • Switch failure
  • No electrical connection/CAN  bus communication
  • Tailgate strut internal failure
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making sure that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
  • Listen for RGTM  beep signal (3 determines an obstruction), inspect for damage to anti-trap trim contact
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, check hinge is free moving
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
Tailgate starts to close but does not reach latch
  • Anti-trap sensor triggered
  • Tailgate set/alignment
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Listen for RGTM  beep signal (3 determines an obstruction), inspect for damage to anti-trap trim contact
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making sure that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, check hinge is free moving
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST I .
Open tailgate requested but latch does not release
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Key not detected
  • Body Control Module (BCM) not releasing latch
  • Soft close actuator malfunction
  • Latch mechanical issue
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, make sure striker is aligned to latch
  • Complete passive entry checks REFER to: LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMS (501-14 Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems, Diagnosis and Testing).
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST D .
Latch does not clasp
  • Key detected in boot (latch closes then opens again with horn chirp)
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Tailgate set/alignment
  • Latch incorrect state (latch partial clasp)
  • Latch mechanical issue
  • Check for key in loadspace area, issue only present when single point entry is active on the vehicle
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, making sure bump stops are correctly adjusted
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
  • Check latch is in open state prior to closing
  • GO to PINPOINT TEST B .
Latch does not soft close (Power latch)
  • Key detected in boot or vehicle (latch closes then opens again with horn chirp)
  • Mechanical obstruction
  • Tailgate set/alignment
  • Soft close actuator mechanical issue
  • Initial latch state not met - has not closed to first clasp (latch open)
  • Latch mechanical issue
  • Latch incorrect state (closing when in first clasp state)
  • Check for key in loadspace area, issue only present when single point entry is active on the vehicle
  • Check and clear any mechanical obstructions, making sure bump stops are correctly adjusted
  • Check the tailgate alignment to body, making sure that the values are with in repair information limits, check torque for all hinge bolt connections REFER to: TAILGATE ALIGNMENT (G2804478)
