Symptom Chart

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES ACTION
Engine immobilized
  • Parked position of the road wheels exerting a torque on the steering column, preventing the electric steering column lock mechanism from moving freely
  • Smart key not recognized
  • Turn the steering wheel to make sure that the electric steering column lock mechanism is free to move
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the remote function actuator for related Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) and refer to the relevant DTC  index
False alarm triggers - Volumetric sensor identified as last known alarm trigger
  • Genuine movement detected, no further action required
  • Water ingress into the volumetric sensor/connectors
  • Poor installation of the volumetric sensor (false trigger)
  • Sensor internal failure
NOTE:
  • Confirm if the vehicle has been checked previously for the same concern or whether this is the first visit to a retailer
  • Make sure to take a recording of the alarm trigger history and add this to the warranty claim
  • Check with the customer to establish whether the vehicle is parked near air force bases or other locations where the vehicle could be subject to loud noises (jets flying overhead, tractors driving very close by)
  • Inspect the area of the volumetric sensor for any evidence of water leaks and rectify as necessary
  • Check the installation of the volumetric sensor, remove and reinstall the sensor making sure all connections are secure and the sensor is correctly installed
  • If there have been repeat visits for false alarm triggers install a new volumetric sensor
Smart key operation - reduced range or intermittent operation
  • Smart key battery low voltage or depleted (no warning message for low battery displayed on the instrument cluster)
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, perform the 'Smart Key Health Check Application' in the service menu. If the results display low battery, install a new battery
  • If the smart key is not recognized measure the voltage of the smart key battery. If the voltage is below 2.9 volts, install a new battery
  • After replacing the battery, for cars with passive entry wait for 10 minutes for the internal battery to charge and perform 'Smart Key Health Check Application' to confirm the rechargeable battery state of charge
  • If the display returns 'low' replace the smart key, otherwise allow the smart key to recharge and return the vehicle to the customer
"Smart Key Not Found" warning message displayed on the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module (IPC) with possible intermittent smart key operation
  • Possible Radio Frequency (RF) coaxial cable concern or defective RF  receiver
  • Follow the below service instruction for - "Smart Key Not Found" warning message
Smart Key inoperative - Insufficient or no power to the smart key
  • Smart key battery upper positive terminal has lifted, due to unnecessary force applied when replacing the battery. As such, there is not enough pressure on the battery with the negative terminal
  • Remove the battery and press the upper positive terminal until the negative grid is touched. Upon recovering the position of the terminal, the coin cell shall have firm positive contact with the upper terminal
  • If the fault persists, continue with the usual diagnostic steps to determine the faulty system component.
