Symptom Chart

SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSE ACTION
Engine immobilized
  • Parked position of the road wheels exerting a torque on the steering column, preventing the electric steering column lock mechanism from moving freely
  • Smart key not recognized
  • Turn the steering wheel to make sure that the electric steering column lock mechanism is free to move
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment, check the remote function actuator for related Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) and refer to the relevant DTC  index
"Smart Key Not Recognized, Reposition or Place As Shown and Press Start Button" message on the instrument cluster
  • The smart key cannot be found by the passive start system within the vehicle. Causes could be the smart key obscured from detection by metallic objects etc., a passive start system fault or a fault with the smart key itself. The message also guides the customer to place the smart key adjacent to the close proximity antenna as a backup
NOTE: Check JLR claims submission system for open campaigns. Refer to the corresponding bulletins and SSMs which may be valid for the specific customer complaint and complete the recommendations as required.
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
"Wrong Smart Key" message on the instrument cluster
  • The message is displayed when the close proximity antenna backup start module fails to recognize the presented smart key. This could be due to poor alignment or a smart key failure
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
"Smart Key No Longer Within Vehicle" message on the instrument cluster
  • This message will only be displayed when the vehicle ignition is on or the engine is running. It indicates that a smart key can no longer be detected within the vehicle passenger compartment after the last vehicle aperture (door or tailgate) is closed. Possible causes could be obscuration of the smart key by metallic objects etc.
NOTE: Due to message display priority, this message can be first noticed during the drive cycle, but is ONLY triggered by the system not being able to detect a smart key at the time the last aperture is closed
NOTE: Explain to the customer that if they exit the vehicle with the ignition on or the engine running the "Smart key no longer within vehicle" message will be displayed until acknowledged by the customer
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
"Smart Key Deactivated Unable to Start Engine" message on the instrument cluster
  • This message occurs when the only smart key found within the passenger compartment had previously been locked in the vehicle and noted as 'deactivated'. For security reasons, this smart key cannot be used to authorize engine start until the vehicle has first been started by a smart key that had not been deactivated when last locked
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
Failure to unlock or lock ALL doors when operating the smart key
  • Passive entry (PE) system unable to authorize unlock/lock action. This is due to either a fault in the PE system, or the smart key itself cannot be found adjacent to the approached aperture or is faulty
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
Poor range of the smart key when any of its push buttons are operated
  • The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system, having very poor range can be due to the in-vehicle Remote Frequency receiver fault, a smart key fault or interference from localized source (for example radio mast)
NOTE: Check JLR claims submission system for open campaigns. Refer to the corresponding bulletins and SSMs which may be valid for the specific customer complaint and complete the recommendations as required.
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided flow for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
False alarm triggers - Volumetric sensor identified as last known alarm trigger
  • Genuine movement detected, no further action required
  • Water ingress into the volumetric sensor/connectors
  • Poor installation of the volumetric sensor (false trigger)
  • Sensor internal failure
NOTE:
  • Confirm if the vehicle has been checked previously for the same concern or whether this is the first visit to a retailer
  • Make sure to take a recording of the alarm trigger history and add this to the warranty claim
  • Check with the customer to establish whether the vehicle is parked near air force bases or other locations where the vehicle could be subject to loud noises (jets flying overhead, tractors driving very close by)
  • Inspect the area of the volumetric sensor for any evidence of water leaks and rectify as necessary
  • Check the installation of the volumetric sensor, remove and reinstall the sensor making sure all connections are secure and the sensor is correctly installed
  • If there have been repeat visits for false alarm triggers install a new volumetric sensor
"Smart Key Not Found" warning message displayed on the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module (IPC) with possible intermittent smart key operation
  • Possible RF  coaxial cable concern or defective RF  receiver
  • Follow the below service instruction for - "Smart Key Not Found" warning message
"Smart Key Not Recognized, Reposition or Place As Shown and Press Start Button" message displayed on the IPC
NOTE: The message guides the customer to place the smart key adjacent to the close proximity antenna as a backup
  • The smart key cannot be found by the passive start system within the vehicle
  • Smart key obscured from detection by metallic objects
  • Passive start system fault
  • Low battery in the smart key
  • Smart key internal failure
  • If the smart key is not recognized measure the voltage of the smart key battery. If the voltage is below 2.9 volts, install a new battery
  • Using the Jaguar Land Rover approved diagnostic equipment refer to the Pathfinder guided diagnostic for "Smart key not found"
  • To navigate to the guided flow select - 'Guided Diagnostics'/'Warnings'/'Messages'/Smart Key not found'
Smart Key inoperative - Insufficient or no power to the smart key
  • Smart key battery upper positive terminal has lifted, due to unnecessary force applied when replacing the battery. As such, there is not enough pressure on the battery with the negative terminal
  • Remove the battery and press the upper positive terminal until the negative grid is touched. Upon recovering the position of the terminal, the coin cell shall have firm positive contact with the upper terminal
  • If the fault persists, continue with the usual diagnostic steps to determine the faulty system component.
