Exhaust Balance Shaft Gear Renew (G2928119): Removal

  1. Raise and support the vehicle on a suitable 2 post lift.

    Refer to: LIFTING

  2. Remove the exhaust side balance shaft.

    Refer to: BALANCE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

    Remove the 16 bolts.

  4. NOTE: Make sure the oil pan is suitably supported.

    Use a suitable tool to remove the oil pan from the cylinder block.

  5. NOTE: If equipped.

    Use a suitable pin to lock the oil pump chain tensioner in the released position.

    • Use the special tool to counter the force and remove the bolt from the oil pump sprocket.

      Special Tool(s): 205-053 

    • Remove the 2 sprockets and the oil pump drive chain.
    • Discard the bolt.

    • Release the electrical connector.
    • Release the wiring harness from the 3 clips.
    • Remove the 4 bolts.
    • Remove the oil pump.

    Remove and discard the O-ring seal.

    • Remove the 12 bolts.
    • Remove the windage tray.

    Remove the 4 bolts.

    Remove the balance shaft gear retaining tool.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1681 

  12. NOTE: The crankshaft position may need to be constantly adjusted when removing the exhaust balance shaft gear.

    1. Remove the exhaust balance shaft gear from the bearing housing.
    2. Rotate the gear 180°.
    3. Use the special tool to rotate the crankshaft to allow the gear to be removed.
    4. Remove the gear.
