A pressure relief type thermostat is located behind the radiator, on a bracket attached to the cooling fan shroud. The thermostat body contains a wax element and a spring loaded bypass valve.
The thermostat housing is connected to the following:
- The radiator upper hose
- The auxiliary radiator
- The radiator lower hose
- The Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) cooler
- The coolant expansion tank
- The feed hose to the variable coolant pump
- The return hose from the heater core
The thermostat allows rapid engine warm-up by preventing engine coolant flow through the radiator. The thermostat is limiting the engine coolant flow through the cylinder block when the engine is cold. The thermostat is not a serviceable item and it can be replaced as an assembly.
