Lower Timing Cover Sealing (G2920267): Repair

  1. CAUTION: Failure to follow this step may result in damage to the crankshaft rear oil seal.

    The existing special tool JLR-303-1674 must be modified as illustrated before use.

    Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674 

  2. CAUTION: Make sure the locating dowels are positioned as shown in the illustration. Failure to position the dowels as shown in the illustration may result in engine damage.

    Using a suitable tool, position the dowels as shown in the illustration.

  3. CAUTION: Make sure all the mating faces are clean and free from foreign material.

    Remove and discard the crankshaft rear oil seal.

  4. CAUTION:
    • Make sure all the mating faces are clean and free from foreign material.
    • The lower timing cover must be installed within 7 minutes of applying the RTV sealant.

    Apply a continuous 3 mm diameter bead of sealant to the area illustrated.

  5. CAUTION:
    • Take care not to damage the cylinder head gasket when installing the lower timing cover.
    • Make sure the dowels are correctly located.

    • Install the lower timing cover.
    • Install and tighten the 4 bolts.

      Torque  : 10 Nm 

  6. Release the 4 bolts by a quarter of a turn.

  7. Install and tighten the 3 bolts.

    Torque  : 12 Nm 

  8. NOTE: Install the bolts to the positions noted on removal.

    Install and tighten the 12 bolts.

    Torque  : 25 Nm

    • Install the crankshaft rear oil seal alignment tool as illustrated.

      Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A 

    • Install and tighten the 2 M8 bolts.

      Torque  : 10 Nm 

  10. CAUTION:
    • Make sure that the mating face is clean and free of foreign material.
    • If the seal is removed from the spacer provided, a new seal must be installed.
    NOTE: The component labelled (2) in the illustration is an alignment spacer provided with the new seal.

    Position the new crankshaft oil seal (1) and spacer (2) over special tool JLR-303-1674A. Carefully slide the crankshaft oil seal (1) over the end of the crankshaft and discard the spacer (2).

    Renew Part: Crankshaft rear seal Quantity: 1 .

    • Install the second part of special tool JLR-303-1674A to position the crankshaft oil seal correctly.

      Install the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A 

    • Tighten the bolt until the seal is fully installed and the bolt stops turning.
  12. Remove the special tools.

    Remove the Special Tool(s): JLR-303-1674A
