Variable Coolant Pump

NOTE:
A thermostat is located in the thermostat housing for conventional thermal operation.
The variable coolant pump has a solenoid operated shroud mechanism. The shroud is used to create zero flow in the engine coolant circuit to enable accelerated engine warm-up. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) controls the solenoid via a hard wired connection. When the engine is cold the PCM energizes the solenoid to move the shroud to the zero flow position. Once the engine coolant temperature is approaching the optimal temperature, the PCM removes de-energizes the solenoid. The solenoid moves to its default position and moves the shroud to the full coolant flow position.
