The electric throttle is installed at the front of the engine, between the cylinder heads.
There is no mechanical linkage between the accelerator pedal and the butterfly valve with electronic throttle control. The position of the butterfly valve is fully controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via a Direct Current (DC) electric motor. The Throttle Position (TP) Sensor is continually read and the PCM makes the appropriate adjustments to reach the desired amount of engine power. This method allows a precisely controlled amount of air into the intake manifold.

The PCM has five connections with the electric throttle motor:
- A ground and two 12V feeds to operate the motor in each direction to open or close the throttle plate
- A 5V reference connection and a signal connection with the TPS in the motor, for closed loop control.
