Vacuum Controlled Actuators

ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 Wastegate actuator
2 Turbine Bypass Valve (TBV) actuator

There are 2 vacuum controlled actuators used within the series sequential system:

  1. The wastegate actuator is used to regulate the maximum boost pressure produced by the fixed compressor.
  2. The Turbine Bypass Valve (TBV) actuator is used to control the amount of boost which is provided by the fixed geometry turbocharger (balancing the operation of the series turbochargers).

Actuator Control Solenoids and Pipework

ITEM DESCRIPTION
1 Wastegate control actuator
2 Wastegate control actuator solenoid
3 Turbine Bypass Valve (TBV) vacuum pipe
4 TBV solenoid
5 TBV actuator
6 TBV vacuum pipe

Both vacuum actuators are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via electrical solenoids located at the front of the engine. A Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal on the negative wire is used to actuate the solenoids. A scope can be used to capture the signal from the PCM.

Both actuators are spring loaded holding the components in the open position and vacuum controlled in the closed position. This allows both actuators to operate in a fail-safe position if there are any electrical or vacuum issues.
