Glow Plug Control Module

The glow plug control module is located in the front right side of the engine compartment, on a bracket attached to the forward face of the right suspension turret.

There are three phases of glow plug heating:

• Pre heating
• Crank heating
• Post heating.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determines the power levels for each phase and heating times from the engine coolant temperature sensors.

When the stop/start switch is operated to start the engine (power mode 9), the PCM calculates any required heating times. If heating is required, the PCM sends a Local Interconnect Network (LIN) bus signal to the glow plug control module. The glow plug control module energizes the glow plugs with the required power levels. If required by the PCM, the glow plug control module keeps the glow plugs energized during engine cranking and for the duration of any post heating phase.

The glow plug control module monitors the drive circuit of the glow plugs for plausibility of operation, continuity, and short and open circuits. If a fault is detected, the glow plug control module sends a signal to the PCM, which then stores a related Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).
