The variable speed, electric cooling fan is installed in a shroud attached to the rear of the radiator. The electric cooling fan is operated by the electric cooling fan control module, which is integrated into the electric cooling fan motor.
The electric cooling fan is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM controls when the cooling fan operates and at what speed.
The PCM determines when to operate the cooling fan from the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensors input and/or a cooling fan request from the HVAC Control Module. The PCM also adjusts the fan speed to compensate for the ram effect of vehicle speed.
The PCM uses a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal to control the electric cooling fan motor speed between 0 and 100%. The electric cooling fan has four modes of operation:
- Off
- Minimum speed (750 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM))
- Linear variable speed between minimum and maximum speeds
- Maximum speed (2820 RPM).
Under hot operating conditions, the fan may continue to operate for up to two minutes after the engine has been switched off.
