Warning Messages

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

WARNING: Filling beyond the maximum fill level can temporarily disable the ultrasonic Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) measure sensor. Overfilling the DEF tank can result in a vehicle inducement condition.

It is a legal requirement for the driver to be informed of the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system faults. If the performance of the SCR system is reduced the Instrument Cluster (IC) will display a warning indicator and a message.

There are 3 possible routes to receive a fault message on the IC:

Low Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) volume in the tank
Incorrect DEF quality supplied to the SCR System
Efficiency of the SCR System is reduced in the event of a system fault.

Low Diesel Exhaust Fluid Level Detected

There are 4 warning stages displayed in the Instrument Cluster (IC) message center. Each warning progresses, until a final 'No Engine Restart Possible' warning is displayed.

If the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) fluid is not replenished within this distance, and the engine is turned off, the vehicle will fail to start. The customers can fill with minimum 3.5 liters of DEF as a short term solution to restart the vehicle. The IC displays the maximum filling level. An authorized Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) retailer will still require the complete refill of the DEF tank.

NOTE: 'XXX' denotes the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) range or the DEF refill volume.

Stage 1

Stage 1 is a low priority message advising of a 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid Level Low' with the white warning indicator. Stage 1 gives 2400 km (1500 miles) ahead of any vehicle restriction in order to allow time to refill the DEF tank.

Stage 2

At Stage 2, an amber warning indicator and messages illuminate to fill the DEF tank. The IC displays the distance reference before the DEF tank is empty and the DEF refill volume.

Stage 3

Stage 3 is an amber warning indicator with a distance reference before the DEF tank is empty and with the DEF refill volume.

Stage 4

Stage 4 is a red warning indicator and indicates the DEF tank is empty and restart of the vehicle is no longer possible. In this stage 4 the customers can fill with minimum 3.5 liters of DEF as a short term solution to restart the vehicle. The IC displays the maximum filling level. An authorized JLR retailer will still require the complete refill of the DEF tank.

Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Detected

The system must be able to identify and respond when the fluid in the DEF tank is not to specification.

The SCR system infers the quality of the DEF through investigation of the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) NOx reduction efficiency. The function is processed using the NOx sensor and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) mapping strategy to continuously determine the calculated SCR conversion efficiency.

If the IC displays the 'Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Detected' message, corrective action needs to be taken. The corrective action contains the draining and refilling the DEF tank with the correct DEF fluid.

The IC message center can display 4 warning stages, until corrective action is done. Each warning progresses, until a final 'Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Detected. No Engine Starts Possible' warning is displayed.

Stage 1

Stage 1 is an amber warning indicator and the IC message center displays the 'Incorrect Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Detected' .

At this stage no distance reference is given. The corrective action required to drain and refill the DEF tank with the correct quality DEF by an authorized JLR retailer.

Stage 2

Stage 2 is an amber warning indicator with a distance reference to advise corrective action to drain and refill the DEF tank with the correct DEF. The corrective action needs to be taken within the distance range stated.

Stage 3

Stage 3 is the final amber warning indicator and no distance reference is given, but approximately 160 km (100 miles) remain for a corrective action. The DEF tank must drain and refill with the correct DEF soon, otherwise an engine restart will not be possible.

Stage 4

Stage 4 is a red warning indicator and indicates the available distance for a corrective action has expired. The engine restart is inhibited until a drain and an authorized JLR retailer undertakes refill of the DEF tank with the correct DEF fluid.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid System Dosing Malfunction Detected

Legislation requires that DEF is continuously available to the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) system. The Instrument Cluster (IC) message center displays a warning if a fault is detected which prevents correct system operation.

There are 2 warning stages displayed in the IC message center, until corrective action is done.
