The Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) is connected to the:
- High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) chassis systems bus, and
- High Speed (HS) Controller Area Network (CAN) powertrain systems bus.
The TCCM receives data from various control modules including the ECM (Engine Control Module) and the ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) control module. Using this information the TCCM determines the required torque to be applied to the front wheels via an electro-hydraulic controlled clutch and chain gear drive to the front driveshaft.
There are two stages of operation the first stage is a pre-emptive stage. In this stage, the vehicle systems are evaluating road surface conditions and assessing the level of traction.
Once the level of traction is understood, the system moves into a second stage of control. This is where an optimum front to rear torque split is determined, based on vehicle speed and cornering conditions.
The TCCM also features a reactive feedback loop to increase torque to the front axle if traction is lost and slip occurs. The TCCM works in conjunction with the:
- Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)
- Electronic Traction Control (ETC)
- and Anti-lock Brake (ABS) systems to maintain the vehicle's traction and stability.
