Repair Procedures: Inspection: Camshaft
- Check the cam height.
Check the cam lobe surface for abnormal wear and damage and replace it if necessary.
Cam height:
Intake: 37.33 mm (1.47 in)
Exhaust: 37.44 mm (1.4740 in)
- Inspect the camshaft journal clearance.
- Clean the bearing caps and camshaft journals.
- Position the camshaft on the cam carrier.
- Lay a strip of plastigage across each of the camshaft journal.
- Install the camshaft front bearing caps (A) and the intake and exhaust camshaft bearing caps (B).
- Install the camshaft front bearing cap and camshaft bearing cap bolts in the forward direction of the engine in accordance with the order shown below.
Tightening torque:
4.9 - 6.7 N.m (0.5 - 0.7 kgf.m, 3.6 - 5.0 lb.ft, 43.4 - 60.8 lb.in)
- Install the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the forward direction of the rear of the engine according to the figure below.
Tightening torque:
4.9 - 6.7 N.m (0.5 - 0.7 kgf.m, 3.6 - 5.0 lb.ft, 43.4 - 60.8 lb.in)
- Install the camshaft bearing cap bolt from the rear of the engine in a forward direction as shown below.
Tightening torque:
4.9 - 6.7 N.m (0.5 - 0.7 kgf.m, 3.6 - 5.0 lb.ft, 43.4 - 60.8 lb.in)
- Install the camshaft front bearing cap and the camshaft bearing cap bolt in a forward direction from the rear of the engine in the sequence shown below.
Tightening torque:
9.8 - 11.8 N.m (1.0 - 1.2 kgf.m, 7.2 - 8.7 lb.ft)
- Install the camshaft front bearing cap and the camshaft bearing cap bolt in a forward direction from the rear of the engine in the sequence shown below.
Tightening torque:
18.6 - 22.6 N.m (1.9 - 2.3 kgf.m, 13.7 - 16.6 lb.ft)
- Install the camshaft bearing cap bolt from the rear of the engine in a forward direction according to the shown below.
Tightening torque:
11.8 - 13.7 N.m (1.2 - 1.4 kgf.m, 8.7 - 10.1 lb.ft)
- Install the camshaft bearing cap bolt from the rear of the engine in a forward direction according to the shown below.
Tightening torque:
11.8 - 13.7 N.m (1.2 - 1.4 kgf.m, 8.7 - 10.1 lb.ft)
- Install the camshaft front bearing cap and camshaft bearing cap bolts in the forward direction of the engine in accordance with the order shown below.
- Remove the camshaft bearing cap
- Measure the plastigage at its widest point.
If the oil clearance is greater than specification, replace the camshaft. If necessary, replace the bearing caps and cam carrier as a set.

Standard:
No. 1 Journal: 0.040 - 0.070 mm (0.00157 - 0.00257 in)
No. 2, 3, 4, 5 Journal: 0.035 - 0.065 mm (0.00137 - 0.00255 in)
- Remove the plastic gauge.
- Remove the camshafts.
- Check the end play of the camshaft.
