Component Testing

  1. Speedometer.
    1. Check the speedometer tolerance and the odometer by using the speedometer tester.
NOTE: Tire wear and tire over or under inflation will increase the indication error.
    2. Check the speedometer if it vibrates or makes abnormal noises.
  2. Tachometer.
    1. Connect a tune-up test tachometer and start the engine.
    2. Compare the tester and tachometer indications. If the difference is excessive, replace the tachometer.
    CAUTION:
    • Reversing the connection of the tachometer will damage the transistor and the diodes inside.
    • When removing and installing the tachometer, be careful not to drop or subject it to severe shock.
  3. Fuel gauge unit.
    1. Lift the vehicle and disconnect the fuel sender connector.
    2. Ground the harness side connector (terminal 1, 3) through the bulb 12V, 3.4W.
    3. Turn the ignition switch on.
    4. Check if the test bulb lights on and if the fuel gauge moves to "F" position slowly.

  4. Fuel sender resistance.
    1. Set the float at "F" and "E" positions and measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 3.
    2. Moving the float from "E" to "F" position, check if the resistance changes slowly.

  5. Fuel level sensor.
    1. Connect a testing bulb between the fuel gauge terminal 1 and 3 and dip the thermistor in water.
    2. Check if the bulb lights on when the thermistor is in water and off when the thermistor is "out".
      NOTE:
      • Replace the fuel sensor assembly if malfunction occurs.
      • After the test, and before the re-installation, dry the sender thoroughly.

  6. Coolant temperature gauge unit.
    1. Easy procedure for coolant temperature gauge (on vehicle).
      1. Disconnect the water temperature sender in the engine compartment.
      2. Ground the harness side connector by connecting in series with a testing bulb, 12V, 3.4W.
      3. Turn the ignition switch on.
      4. Check if the bulb lights on and if the water temperature gauge moves.
    2. Coolant temperature sender check.

Measure the resistance between the terminal and ground using ohmmeter. Check if the measurement is within the standard value and replace it if necessary.

  7. Oil pressure switch
    1. Stop the engine to check continuity between the terminal and ground.
    2. Start the engine to check continuity between terminal and ground.
    3. Change the switch if it deviates from standard value.

    4. Disconnect the connector warning switch and the ground terminal located at the wire harness side connector.
    5. Turn the ignition switch on and check if the warning lamp lights on.

Test the bulb or check the wire harness when it fails to light on.

  8. Brake warning lamp and switch.

Brake warning lamp illuminates when brake fluid level is below the standard value with the ignition switch on, or, when the brake fluid level sensor or parking brake switch is on with the parking brake pulled up.

NOTE: Brake fluid level sensor is located in the master cylinder reservoir tank.
    1. Disconnect the brake fluid level gauge connector.
    2. Check continuity between terminals with the ignition switch off (The float rises).
    3. Check continuity between terminals with the ignition switch on (The float lowers).

If continuity is not as specified, replace the sensor.

  9. Parking brake switch.

Parking brake is foot type and parking brake switch is located over the parking brake pedal. To adjust, move the switch mount up or down with the parking brake pedal released all the way.

    1. Check that there is continuity between terminal and switch body with the switch ON (Brake pedal is depressed).
    2. Check that there is no continuity between terminal and switch body with the switch OFF (Brake pedal is released).

If continuity is not as specified, replace the switch or inspect the grounding point.

  10. Door switch.

Remove the door switch and check continuity between terminals.

If continuity is not as specified, replace the door switch.
