DTC 53: Driver Module Short To Ground

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect ADU connector and wire harness-to-clockspring connector. Measure resistance between ADU connector terminal No. 10 (Yellow-Black wire) and ground. See Figure. Measure resistance between ADU connector terminal No. 11 (Yellow-Red wire) and ground. If resistance is less than infinite in either circuit, replace wire harness between ADU connector and clockspring. If resistance is infinite in both circuits, go to next step.
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Measure resistance between clock spring connector terminal No. 2 (Yellow-Red wire) and ground. Measure resistance between clock spring connector terminal No. 1 (Yellow-Black wire) and ground. If resistance is less than infinite in either circuit, replace clockspring assembly. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is infinite in both circuits, replace driver-side air bag module.
