Valve Guides
- Measure valve stem diameter. Replace valve if stem diameter is not within specification. Measure valve stem oil clearance. See CYLINDER HEAD and VALVES & VALVE SPRINGS
tables under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- If clearance exceeds service limit, valve guide can be replaced with an oversized valve guide. See OVERSIZE VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS (1.5L) or OVERSIZE VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS (1.8L)
table.
- Using a press, push valve guide out toward combustion chamber. Re-bore valve guide hole in cylinder head to match oversize valve guide to be used. DO NOT install a valve guide the same size as the one removed.
NOTE:
Intake valve guides are shorter than exhaust valve guides.
- Using a press, install NEW valve guide into cylinder head from top side of head. Install valve guide to proper height. Measure oil clearance of NEW valve guides. Ream valve guide if necessary. Re-face valves and seats. See OVERSIZE VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS (1.5L) or OVERSIZE VALVE GUIDE SPECIFICATIONS (1.8L)
table. See CYLINDER HEAD table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
