Dual Pane Sunroof
DESCRIPTION
The dual pane sunroof system consists of a front sliding glass panel and rear stationary glass panel which allows additional sun light and/or ventilation into the interior of the vehicle. The system also includes a power sunshade which can be closed when additional sun light is not desired.
The dual pane sunroof system allows the sunroof front glass to be opened, closed or placed in the vent position electrically by actuating switches in the overhead console. The sunroof system receives battery feed through a fuse in the Power Distribution Center (PDC) and an ignition wire to determine vehicle ignition state. The sunroof will only operate when the ignition is set to ON/RUN, or Accessory Delay System is active. The Accessory Delay System enables accessory operation after the ignition has been switched off and neither front door has been opened. The sunroof system does not communicate through Controller Area Network (CAN) Bus Circuit. Therefore, the power sunroof system cannot generate Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
The dual pane sunroof system features an express operation (press & release switch) convenience feature that will automatically open or close the sunroof or sunshade. The glass features two programmed stop positions; comfort stop position and full open position. The comfort stop position is approximately 180 mm (7 inches) forward of the full open position and has been optimized to minimize wind buffeting in the interior when the vehicle is driven with sunroof open and all side windows closed. In addition the power sunroof system also features an obstacle detection feature which automatically reverses the sunroof or sunshade when it encounters an obstacle within the roof opening during express close operation.
The sunroof glass can be cycled to the following positions:
- Vent Position - The sunroof glass panel tilts upward 32 mm (1.25 in) at the rear for the Vent position.
- Comfort Stop Position - The sunroof glass panel slides open approximately 410 mm (16.1 in) from the closed position.
- Full Open Position - The sunroof glass panel slides open approximately 590 mm (23.2 in) from the closed position.
- Closed Position - The sunroof glass panel seals flush with the roof in the closed position to eliminate wind noise.
There are two electric motors located on the rear of the dual pane sunroof assembly that operate the sliding glass panel and sunshade. For further information regarding the sunroof motor drive systems, refer to the Power Systems service information for additional information on these components.
The dual pane sunroof glass panels interface with the body roof opening flange with rubber seals to prevent wind noise and minimize water intrusion when the sunroof is closed. The sunroof system features a water management system that collects any water that leaks passed the sunroof seals and drains it safely outside the vehicle through drain hoses connected at all four corners of the sunroof frame.
The sunroof system features a wind deflector that automatically deploys when the sunroof is in a slide open position to help minimize wind buffeting and wind noise. Wind buffeting is a pressure pulse that may be heard or felt when driving with sunroof open and side windows closed.
The main components of the dual pane sunroof system are:
- Fixed Rear Glass Panel
- Front Glass Panel
- Frame and Mechanism
- Motor Assemblies
- Power Sunshade
- Overhead Switches
- Wind Deflector
- Drain Hoses
OPERATION
The power sunroof system can only be operated when the vehicle ignition is set to ON/RUN, or Accessory Delay System is active. If the sunroof is in operation when the vehicle ignition is switched to START the sunroof will stop all motion. The sunroof switch will need to be pressed again to continue sunroof operation after the engine has started. If the sunroof is in operation when the vehicle ignition is switched to OFF all sunroof motion will stop immediately unless Accessory Delay System is active.
The sunroof has two modes of operation, Manual and Express:
- Manual mode is active when the sunroof switch is pressed and held for a time >0.8 seconds. When in manual mode the sunroof or sunshade operation will stop whenever the switch released.
- Express mode is active when the sunroof switch is pressed & released in a time <0.8 seconds. Express mode operation is a convenience feature that will automatically open or close the sunroof. Pressing any of the sunroof switches while express mode is active will immediately stop sunroof operation. The sunroof also provides an obstacle detection feature during express mode operation which automatically reverses the sunroof when it encounters an obstacle within the roof opening. Express mode operation for vent is not available when vent operation is initiated when the glass is in a slide open position.
A switch cluster mounted in the overhead console controls sunroof operation. The sunroof switch cluster consists of three rocker switches (Sunroof Open/Close, Vent Open/Close, Sunshade Open/Close). Pressing the sunroof switch rearward commands the sunroof open, pressing the sunroof switch forward commands the sunroof closed. Pressing the vent switch rearward commands the sunroof to vent position, pressing the vent switch forward commands the sunroof closed. Pressing the sunshade switch rearward commands the sunshade open, pressing the sunshade switch forward commands the sunshade closed. If sunroof glass and sunshade are closed and one of the sunroof open/vent switches are pressed, the system will automatically retract the sunshade to behind the front glass opening (mid-point) before opening or venting the sunroof glass pane. Therefore the sunshade can never cover movable glass pane opening unless the pane is in the fully closed position.
The sunroof has two programmed slide open stop positions; comfort stop position and full open position. The comfort stop position is approximately 180 mm (7 inches) forward of the full open position and has been optimized to minimize wind buffeting in the interior when the vehicle is driven with sunroof open and all side windows closed. When opening the sunroof in either manual or express mode operation the sunroof will always stop at the comfort stop position. The sunroof open switch must be pressed again to continue to the full open position.
The below chart describes the normal sunroof response to glass control switch inputs for both Express and Manual operation (unless noted) when the glass is in various positions.
| Initial Glass Position | Glass Closed Position | Glass Comfort Stop Position | Glass Slide Full Open Position | Glass Vent Position | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glass Switch Actuation | OPEN | Sunshade opens to mid position (if closed) then glass slides open to comfort stop position | Glass slides open from comfort stop to full open position | No movement | Glass slides open from the vent position | Sunroof Response |
| VENT | Sunshade opens to mid position (if closed) then glass cycles to vent position | Glass first slides forward and stops at vent position | Glass slides forward and stops at vent position | No movement | ||
| CLOSE | No movement | Glass slides to closed position | Glass slides to closed position | Glass cycles to the closed position |
For sunshade operation pressing the sunshade switch forward commands the sunshade closed. Pressing the sunshade switch rearward commands the sunshade open. When opening the sunshade it will automatically stop at mid-position, the sunshade open switch must be pressed again to continue to full open position. When attempting to close the sunshade and the glass is in the vented or open position the sunshade will stop at the mid-position. Pressing the sunshade close switch again will automatically close the glass; once the glass has fully closed the sunshade will automatically cycle to the closed position.
The below chart describes the normal sunroof response to sunshade control switch inputs for both Express and Manual operation when the sunshade is in various positions.
| Initial Shade Position | Shade Closed | Shade Half Open | Shade Full Open | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shade Switch Actuation | OPEN | Sunshade cycles to half open position | Sunshade cycles to full open position | No movement | Sunroof Response |
| CLOSE | No movement | Glass first cycles to closed position (if glass open or vented) then sunshade cycles to closed position |
