Theory Of Operation-Acceleration/Impact Sensor

The Occupant Restraint system uses two distinct type of Acceleration/Impact sensors. Both sensor types are 2-wire sensors that communicate with the Occupant Restraint Module (ORC) using a PSI5 communication bus protocol. Impact sensors are located in the door module carrier. Impact sensors measure pressure changes within the carrier and communicate this data to the ORC. Acceleration sensors are typically located near the exterior corners of the vehicle and measure motion/speed changes. These changes in pressure and rate of motion are reported to the ORC and used to determine what restraint action is necessary.
