Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
    2. With the scan tool, run a Vehicle Scan Report or record the Environmental Data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for at least 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

  2. CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    WARNING:

    Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    WARNING:

    If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    NOTE:

    Probing of the circuit cavities at the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) body harness connectors and in-line connectors using test kit 2022900080 for back probing the terminal will prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures. 

    1. Disconnect the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector.
    2. Disconnect the related ORC harness connector.
    3. If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    4. If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    5. Measure the voltage of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and ground.
    6. Measure the voltage of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and ground.

      Is there any voltage present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  3. CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    WARNING:

    Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Measure the resistance of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and ground.
    2. Measure the resistance of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and ground.

      Is there continuity between ground and the circuit(s) being tested?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  4. CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER 
    NOTE:

    At this time of the diagnostic testing process, the

    ORC is disconnected

    and the

    ignition is OFF

    .

    1. Measure the resistance between the related Impact Pressure Sensor Signal and Sensor Ground circuits at Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector.

      Is there continuity between the related Impact Pressure Sensor circuits?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  5. CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT PRESSURE SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    NOTE:

    At this time of the diagnostic testing process, the ORC is still disconnected and the ignition is OFF.

    1. Measure the resistance of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the related Impact Pressure Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact Pressure Sensor harness connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 0.5 Ohm on both circuits?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Repair the related Impact Pressure Sensor circuit(s) for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT PRESSURE SENSOR 
    1. Replace the related Impact Pressure Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, IMPACT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
    2. Reconnect the vehicle body harness to the related impact / acceleration sensor.
    3. Remove any special tools or jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components - except the Battery.
    4. If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    5. If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    6. Connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector - use the most current software available.
    7. Use the scan tool and erase the stored codes in all airbag system modules.
    8. Turn the Ignition Off, and wait 15 seconds before turning the Ignition On.
    9. Wait one minute, and read active codes and if there are none present read the stored codes.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

  7. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    WARNING:

    Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    WARNING:

    If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Disconnect all Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
    10. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
