Resetting Cam Chain TENSIONER

The cam chain tensioner uses engine oil pressure to apply pressure to the cam chain tensioner arm and control cam chain slack. In the absence of oil pressure, such as engine start-up, the tensioner must still control chain slack until oil pressure rises. To achieve this an internal spring extends the tensioner piston from the tensioner body. To limit piston travel and account for normal cam chain wear, the piston has a groved surface with a ratchet clip that moves down the piston shaft from one grove to the next as the piston extends from the tensioner body. The grooves in the piston surface are configured so as to allow the ratchet clip to move in one direction only and not allow the piston to retract back into the tensioner body. In order to reset the tensioner, the ratchet clip must be expanded so that the piston can be pushed back into the tensioner body.

1. While holding the timing chain tensioner clip in the open position using 2079702090 - Tool, Tensioner Clip Release (a T50 Torx) from the (special tool #2079700090, Kit, Timing Chain Tensioner), compress the secondary tensioner.

   1 - Tensioner Holding Pin

   NOTE:

   When installing the Tensioner Holding Pin, be sure  the pin goes through the top and bottom holes on the tensioner.

2. From the (special tool #2079700090, Kit, Timing Chain Tensioner), insert the 2079703090 tensioner holding pin tool through the secondary timing chain tensioner, locking it in place.

WITH TIMING COVER INSTALLED 

1. Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to COVER(S), CYLINDER HEAD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

2. From the (special tool #2079700090, Kit, Timing Chain Tensioner), install the tensioner pressing tool.

   1 - Tensioner Clip Release Tool (T50 Torx)

3. From the (special tool #2079700090, Kit, Timing Chain Tensioner), use the tensioner clip release tool to remove the access plug from the timing cover.
4. Using the tensioner clip release tool, release the secondary timing chain tensioner clip and hold the clip in the open position.
5. While holding the timing chain tension in the open position, tighten the tensioner pressing tool bolt until the secondary tensioner is compressed.

   NOTE:

   When installing the Tensioner Holding Pin, be sure  the pin goes through the top and bottom holes on the tensioner.

6. From the (special tool #2079700090, Kit, Timing Chain Tensioner), insert the tensioner holding pin tool through the secondary timing chain tensioner locking it in place. Now the tensioner pressing tool may be removed and the access plug reinstalled.
