Main Bearings / Engine Block Inspection

- Wipe the upper and lower bearing inserts clean, and inspect the following:
- Inspect the inserts for abnormal wear patterns, scoring, grooving, fatigue, pitting and for metal or other foreign material imbedded in the lining.
- Inspect the back of the inserts for fractures, scrapes, or irregular wear patterns.
- Inspect the insert locking tabs for damage.
- Inspect the crankshaft thrust bearings for scoring, scratches, wear or blueing.
- Replace any bearing that shows abnormal wear. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE

1 - Straight Edge 2 - Feeler Gauge - Check the deck surface flatness with a straight edge and a feeler gauge.
- The deck surface must be flat within specification. Refer to ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Inspect the main bearing bores for signs of scoring, nicks and burrs.
- The 3.0L cylinder bores utilize a thin (~0.120 mm/0.005 in.) sprayed steel coating that is very hard and wear resistant. The bores are honed with a torque plate attached to simulate the distortion associated with the assembly of the cylinder head. Hand bore gauge measurements without a torque plate will not be accurate.
- Use the size that is marked on the block if new pistons are being refitted, do not measure the block for size .
- Minor glazing of the bore can be removed with the proper flex size flex hone using 20-40 strokes.
- Bores with deep scratches or scuffed surfaces (metal transfer from the pistons) cannot be repaired and require the cylinder block to be replaced.
