Disassembly And Assembly - On Vehicle: Notes

DISASSEMBLY 

NOTE:

The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.

  1. Remove the rocker arms and hydraulic lifters. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
  2. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
  3. Assemble the (special tool #10224, Adapter, Valve Spring) on the (special tool #MD998772A, Compressor, Valve Spring).

  4. Install the valve spring compressor tool onto the cylinder head.
    CAUTION:

    Air pressure must be maintained as long as the valve springs are removed to prevent the valves from dropping into the cylinders.

  5. Install a spark plug adapter and the (special tool #2049200090, Regulator, Pressure Test) to the cylinder being serviced. Pressurize the cylinder being serviced to 620.5 - 689 kPa (90 - 100 psi) to hold the valves in place.

  6. Using the valve spring compressor tool, compress valve spring and remove valve retaining locks and discard them.
    NOTE:

    The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.

    NOTE:

    If the springs are to be reused, identify their positions so that they can be reassembled into their original locations.

  7. Release the valve spring compression and remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.

  8. Remove the valve guide seal.

ASSEMBLY 

  1. Install the NEW  valve guide seal over the valve guide. Verify that the garter spring is intact around the top of the valve guide seal.
    NOTE:

    The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.

    NOTE:

    If the valve springs are being reused, reassemble them into their original locations.

  2. Install the valve spring and valve spring retainer.
  3. Using the valve spring compressor tool, compress the valve spring only enough  to install the NEW  valve retaining locks.
  4. Remove the valve spring compressor tool.
  5. Relieve the air pressure and remove the spark plug adapter.
  6. Install the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
  7. Install the hydraulic lifters, rocker arms. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION  .
