Disassembly And Assembly - On Vehicle: Notes
DISASSEMBLY
The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.
- Remove the rocker arms and hydraulic lifters. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
- Assemble the (special tool #10224, Adapter, Valve Spring) on the (special tool #MD998772A, Compressor, Valve Spring).
1 - Valve Spring Compressor Tool - Install the valve spring compressor tool onto the cylinder head.CAUTION:
Air pressure must be maintained as long as the valve springs are removed to prevent the valves from dropping into the cylinders.
- Install a spark plug adapter and the (special tool #2049200090, Regulator, Pressure Test) to the cylinder being serviced. Pressurize the cylinder being serviced to 620.5 - 689 kPa (90 - 100 psi) to hold the valves in place.
1 - Valve Spring Retainer Locks 2 - Valve Spring Retainer 3 - Valve Spring 4 - Valve Guide Seal 5 - Valve - Using the valve spring compressor tool, compress valve spring and remove valve retaining locks and discard them.NOTE:
The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.
NOTE:If the springs are to be reused, identify their positions so that they can be reassembled into their original locations.
- Release the valve spring compression and remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.
1 - Valve Guide Seal - Remove the valve guide seal.
ASSEMBLY
- Install the NEW
valve guide seal over the valve guide. Verify that the garter spring is intact around the top of the valve guide seal.NOTE:
The intake and exhaust springs are NOT interchangeable. Mark the springs accordingly for installation. Correctly identify the part numbers for new springs being installed.
NOTE:If the valve springs are being reused, reassemble them into their original locations.
- Install the valve spring and valve spring retainer.
- Using the valve spring compressor tool, compress the valve spring only enough to install the NEW valve retaining locks.
- Remove the valve spring compressor tool.
- Relieve the air pressure and remove the spark plug adapter.
- Install the spark plugs. Refer to SPARK PLUG .
- Install the hydraulic lifters, rocker arms. Refer to LIFTER(S), HYDRAULIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
