System Operation - Ignition System

The ignition system utilizes a coil on plug design. There is one ignition coil used for each individual cylinder. The ignition coils are mounted directly over the each spark plug. Each coil is individually controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM controls the on time of each ignition coil primary (dwell time) through a 5 volt control circuit connected to the ignition coil. When he 5 volt control is turned on to the ignition coil the transistor inside the ignition coil is energized allowing the ignition coil primary circuit to connect to the ground path provided by the PCM building a magnetic field in the primary circuit. The PCM turns off the 5 volt control circuit which turns off the transistor. This removes the ground path for the primary circuit causing the magnetic field to collapse into the secondary side of the coil and on through the spark plug.

All engines use a fixed ignition timing system. Basic ignition timing is not adjustable. All spark advance is determined and controlled by the PCM.
