Engine Lubrication
DESCRIPTION
OPERATION
Mechanical engine components are supplied with lubrication through a complex system of internal oil galleries in the engine block and cylinder head. The oil system pressure is created by a variable displacement oil pump and temperature controlled by a heat exchanger in the engine oil cooler.
The engine lubrication system also features an oil pump displacement control solenoid valve and a spin-on disposable engine oil filter.
The variable displacement oil pump can change its output through mechanical means and control commands from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
The oil pump pick-up is attached directly to the pump.
The function of the engine oil pump displacement control solenoid valve is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
When the solenoid valve is closed (Not Energized), the oil pump's displacement will be controlled by the mechanical regulation of the electromechanical solenoid valve, and will default to the highest pressure setting.
When the solenoid valve is open (energized), oil pressure from the main oil gallery flows into the control chamber of the oil pump, and moves the eccentric ring downward to reduce the displacement of the oil pump and reduce oil pressure.
The oil filter features a rubber seal where it mounts to the oil pan.

Engine oil enters the oil filter base through oil inlet ports and exits from the center through the threaded mounting nipple.
Engine oil from the oil pump outlet passes through the oil pan, into the engine block, back into the oil pan, and enters the oil filter.

The oil cooler mounts directly to the engine. Engine coolant is circulated through the oil cooler to assist in cooling the engine oil.
