Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECU's) and record on the repair order.
    2. With the scan tool, run a vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the saved DTC information recorded on the repair order and the When Monitored Conditions, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

  2. DETERMINE THE STATUS 
    NOTE:

    The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over an LVDS circuit.

    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECU's) and record on the repair order.

      DTCs of Interest 

      • Antenna
      • U-codes (Loss of Communication, Implausible, Invalid, Missing Message, etc.)

      Were any related DTCs of interest set?

      Yes 

      • Repair ANY  and ALL  antenna related DTCs.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  3. ANTENNA INSPECTION 
    1. Using Service Information locate and verify the antenna is on the vehicle.
    2. Visually inspect the Antenna for damage.

      Is the antenna missing or damaged?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To Next Step.
  4. CHECK THE ANTENNA SIGNAL COAXIAL CABLE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE TBM2 AND THE RADIO 
    NOTE:

    The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over the LVDS circuit.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Confirm all related connectors for the circuit are fully seated.
    3. Disconnect the related circuit at the TBM2.
    4. Disconnect the related circuit at the Radio.
    5. Inspect both of the Cellular Antenna connections and verify the Antenna is torqued to specification.

      Were the connections clean and fully seated?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Clean the LVDS coaxial cable circuit connection(s) and fully seat the connector(s) as necessary.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE RADIO 
    NOTE:

    Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.

    1. Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the Radio Cellular Antenna harness connection at the Radio.
      NOTE:

      A connector with multiple coaxial cable connections require the use of the special tool #9977-6-7, (Universal Antenna Adapter) for further testing.

    2. Place the test antenna base on the roof of the vehicle.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
    5. Turn the Radio on.

      Is the reception still poor or not available?

      Yes 

      • Go To  11

      No 

      • The Radio is no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.
  6. CHECK THE ANTENNA SIGNAL COAXIAL CABLE BETWEEN THE RADIO AND TBM2 
    1. Turn the ignition off.

    2. Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Radio.
    3. Disconnect the D8 circuit harness connector from the TBM2.
    4. Connect the appropriate Jumper: special tool # 9977-6-4 or special tool # 9977-6-2, to the D8 circuit TBM2 harness connector.
    5. Connect the appropriate Adapter: special tool # 9977-6-1 or special tool # 9977-6-3, to the D8 circuit Radio harness connector.

    6. Measure the resistance across the tool terminals.

      Is the resistance between 47.5 and 52.5 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • The Radio and D8 circuit are no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Replace the D8 Antenna Signal Cable circuit between the TBM2 and Radio in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE COAXIAL CABLE ANTENNA CONNECTIONS 
    NOTE:

    The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over an LVDS circuit.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Radio.
    3. Reconnect the D8 circuit to the Radio.
    4. Confirm all related connectors for the J240 circuit are fully seated.
    5. Disconnect the Cellular Antenna connector at the Antenna.
    6. Disconnect the Cellular Antenna connector at the TBM2.
    7. Inspect both of the Cellular Antenna connections and verify the Antenna is torqued to specification.

      Were the antenna connections clean and torqued to specification?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Clean the Cellular Antenna connection(s) / torque to specification as necessary.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. CHECK THE TBM2 
    NOTE:

    Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the J240 circuit from the TBM2.
    3. Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the TBM2.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
    6. Turn the Radio on.

      Is the reception still poor or not available?

      Yes 

      No 

      • The Radio, D8 circuit, and TBM2 are no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.
  9. CELLULAR ANTENNA 
    NOTE:

    Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.

    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the TBM2.
    3. Reconnect the TBM2 harness connector.
    4. Disconnect the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
    5. Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
    6. Turn the ignition on.
    7. Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
    8. Turn the Radio on.

      Is the reception still poor or not available?

      Yes 

      • Go To Next Step.

      No 

      • Replace the Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  10. CELLULAR ANTENNA CABLE 
    1. Turn the ignition off.

    2. Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
    3. Connect the appropriate Jumper: special tool # 9977-6-4 or special tool # 9977-6-2, to the TBM2 Antenna harness connector (2) at the Antenna.
    4. Connect the appropriate Adapter: special tool # 9977-6-1 or special tool # 9977-6-3, to the TBM2 cellular harness connector (2).

    5. Measure the resistance across the tool terminals.

      Is the resistance between 47.5 and 52.5 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • The source of the poor reception is not caused by the Radio, TBM2, Cellular Antenna Cable or Cellular Antenna.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Replace the LVDS Coaxial Cable between the TBM2 and Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
  11. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all Radio harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Presence of foreign conductive materials on connector pins and terminals.
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all Radio harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, perform an ECU reset to the Radio and CVPAM, and then erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read Radio DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
