Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECU's) and record on the repair order.
- With the scan tool, run a vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the saved DTC information recorded on the repair order and the When Monitored Conditions, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Perform the appropriate INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to: TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- DETERMINE THE STATUS NOTE:
The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over an LVDS circuit.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECU's) and record on the repair order.
DTCs of Interest
- Antenna
- U-codes (Loss of Communication, Implausible, Invalid, Missing Message, etc.)
Were any related DTCs of interest set?
Yes
- Repair ANY and ALL antenna related DTCs.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To Next Step.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECU's) and record on the repair order.
- ANTENNA INSPECTION
- Using Service Information locate and verify the antenna is on the vehicle.
- Visually inspect the Antenna for damage.
Is the antenna missing or damaged?
Yes
- Replace the Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To Next Step.
- CHECK THE ANTENNA SIGNAL COAXIAL CABLE CIRCUIT BETWEEN THE TBM2 AND THE RADIO NOTE:
The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over the LVDS circuit.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Confirm all related connectors for the circuit are fully seated.
- Disconnect the related circuit at the TBM2.
- Disconnect the related circuit at the Radio.
- Inspect both of the Cellular Antenna connections and verify the Antenna is torqued to specification.
Were the connections clean and fully seated?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Clean the LVDS coaxial cable circuit connection(s) and fully seat the connector(s) as necessary.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE RADIO NOTE:
Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.
- Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the Radio Cellular Antenna harness connection at the Radio.NOTE:
A connector with multiple coaxial cable connections require the use of the special tool #9977-6-7, (Universal Antenna Adapter) for further testing.
- Place the test antenna base on the roof of the vehicle.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
- Turn the Radio on.
Is the reception still poor or not available?
Yes
- Go To 11
No
- The Radio is no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.
- Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the Radio Cellular Antenna harness connection at the Radio.
- CHECK THE ANTENNA SIGNAL COAXIAL CABLE BETWEEN THE RADIO AND TBM2
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Radio.
- Disconnect the D8 circuit harness connector from the TBM2.
- Connect the appropriate Jumper: special tool # 9977-6-4 or special tool # 9977-6-2, to the D8 circuit TBM2 harness connector.
- Connect the appropriate Adapter: special tool # 9977-6-1 or special tool # 9977-6-3, to the D8 circuit Radio harness connector.
- Measure the resistance across the tool terminals.
Is the resistance between 47.5 and 52.5 Ohms?
Yes
- The Radio and D8 circuit are no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.
No
- Replace the D8 Antenna Signal Cable circuit between the TBM2 and Radio in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- Turn the ignition off.
- CHECK THE COAXIAL CABLE ANTENNA CONNECTIONS NOTE:
The Cellular Antenna is wired directly to the Global Telematics Box Module (TBM2) and the signal information is then given to the Radio over an LVDS circuit.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Radio.
- Reconnect the D8 circuit to the Radio.
- Confirm all related connectors for the J240 circuit are fully seated.
- Disconnect the Cellular Antenna connector at the Antenna.
- Disconnect the Cellular Antenna connector at the TBM2.
- Inspect both of the Cellular Antenna connections and verify the Antenna is torqued to specification.
Were the antenna connections clean and torqued to specification?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Clean the Cellular Antenna connection(s) / torque to specification as necessary.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE TBM2 NOTE:
Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the J240 circuit from the TBM2.
- Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the TBM2.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
- Turn the Radio on.
Is the reception still poor or not available?
Yes
- Replace the TBM2 in accordance with the Service information. Refer to: MODULE, GLOBAL TELEMATICS BOX, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The Radio, D8 circuit, and TBM2 are no longer a possible cause - Go To Next Step.
- CELLULAR ANTENNA NOTE:
Antenna reception testing must be done outside and away from man made structures or natural features to ensure all signals are not obstructed.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the TBM2.
- Reconnect the TBM2 harness connector.
- Disconnect the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
- Connect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and the special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) to the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Drive the vehicle outside to an un-obstructed area.
- Turn the Radio on.
Is the reception still poor or not available?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Replace the Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CELLULAR ANTENNA CABLE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the special tool # 9977-6-9, (RG-58 Coax Cable Adapter) and special tool # 9977-6-CELL-LTE, (Cellular Antenna Diagnostic Adapter) from the Cellular Antenna harness connector.
- Connect the appropriate Jumper: special tool # 9977-6-4 or special tool # 9977-6-2, to the TBM2 Antenna harness connector (2) at the Antenna.
- Connect the appropriate Adapter: special tool # 9977-6-1 or special tool # 9977-6-3, to the TBM2 cellular harness connector (2).
- Measure the resistance across the tool terminals.
Is the resistance between 47.5 and 52.5 Ohms?
Yes
- The source of the poor reception is not caused by the Radio, TBM2, Cellular Antenna Cable or Cellular Antenna.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the LVDS Coaxial Cable between the TBM2 and Cellular Antenna in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- Turn the ignition off.
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Disconnect all Radio harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Presence of foreign conductive materials on connector pins and terminals.
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all Radio harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, perform an ECU reset to the Radio and CVPAM, and then erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read Radio DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace the Radio in accordance with the Service information. Refer to: RADIO, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to: BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- Test complete.
