Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR ANY SERVICE BULLETINS THAT APPLY 
    1. Before proceeding with this test procedure, perform any Service Bulletins or PCM Flash updates that relate to this fault code.

      Are there any Service Bulletins or PCM Flash updates available?

      Yes 

      • Perform the applicable Service Bulletins or PCM Flash update.
      • Verify the system is not leaking by performing the ELCM Forced Monitor Test.

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK FOR OTHER DTCS 
    1. Refer to the recorded DTCs.

      Are there any Fresh Air side leaking DTCs active or pending?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE CONDITION 
    CAUTION:

    Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic)
      NOTE:

      The Fuel Tank should have less than 85% of fuel tank capacity to properly test the Evap system.

    2. Connect the red power lead of the EELD to the Battery positive terminal and the black ground lead to Battery negative terminal.
    3. Connect shop air to the EELD.
    4. Set the smoke/air control switch to AIR.
      NOTE:

      The Evaporative system should not be tested by putting smoke into the system because the residue from the smoke being generated will damage the ELCM.

    5. Press the remote smoke/air start button.
    6. Block off the end of the tester's AIR supply tip (clear hose) while pressing the remote start button.
      NOTE:

      The indicator ball should be resting on the bottom of the air flow meter (this is calibrated to no leak present) if the EELD is calibrated correctly.

    7. Position the red flag on the air flow meter so it is aligned with the indicator ball in the event it is not resting on the bottom of air flow meter.
    8. Disconnect the line from the FTIV that is connected to the Fuel Tank side of the system.
    9. Connect the service adapter to the Fuel Tank side line.
    10. Connect the AIR supply hose from the EELD to the adapter.
    11. Press the remote button to activate AIR flow.
      NOTE:

      Depending on the vehicles fuel level, or vehicle venting configuration, it can take several minutes to fill the system.

    12. Compare the flow meter indicator ball reading to the red flag.
      NOTE:

      If the indicator ball drops down to the bottom of the air flow meter, or below the red flag that would indicate that the system is sealed and not leaking.

      Did the Large Leak test pass or fail?

      Passed 

      • Go To  4

      Failed 

      • Go To  5
  4. EVAP SYSTEM INSPECTION 
    NOTE:

    Extreme temperatures during testing can yield poor results. High fuel temperature, either from a hot engine or extremely high ambient temperature, can cause excessive fuel vaporization which can cause pressure in the system to become too high or unstable and yield poor results that falsely indicate a leak during testing. Extreme cold temperatures could possibly conceal a potential leak during testing. For best results, if one of the previous conditions is true, allow the vehicle to sit inside the shop and achieve a reasonable temperature before checking for leaks. Recommend somewhere between approximately 10°C (50°F) and 30°C(86°F).

    NOTE:

    It is possible that the Capless Fuel Filler Assembly was previously leaking but is presently sealed.

    1. Perform a visual inspection of the Fuel Tank side of the Evaporative Emission System for any of the following conditions but not limited to:
      • For fuel systems that are capless: 
      • Damaged seal points on the Capless Fuel Filler Assembly causing an intermittent leak
      • Loose/poor sealing points at the connections between the components and lines
      • Damaged components
    2. For fuel systems with a fuel cap: 
    3. Damaged seal points on the fuel cap gasket causing an intermittent leak
    4. Compressed fuel cap tether in places that match a compressed fuel cap seal causing an intermittent leak
    5. Loose/poor sealing points at the connections between the components and lines
    6. Damaged components

    Were any problems found?

    Yes 

    No 

    • If there were DTCs present against the FTIV or Capless Fuel Filler Assembly along with the large leak DTC, the most likely cause is an intermittent leak from that component. Replace the component that had the DTC in accordance with the Service Information. If there were no other DTCs present, inspect these components for signs of a possible intermittent leak.
    • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. EVAPORATIVE EMISSION LEAK DETECTION 
    NOTE:

    A thorough visual inspection of the Evap system hoses, tubes, and connections may save time in your diagnosis. Look for any physical damage or signs of wetness at connections. The strong smell of fuel vapors may also aid in diagnosis.

    1. Use the EELD Tester to pressurize the system and check for leaks with soapy water at the lines or connection points to the components in the system.

      Select the appropriate response from the list below:

      A leak was found at the Fuel Filler Tube Assembly: 

      • Perform the appropriate repair by replacing the Fuel Filler Tube Assembly.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      A leak was found in the Fuel Tank side of the system: 

      • If the leak is at a hose connection, remove the hose, clean the connection and then reconnect the hose and check for a leak again. All other leaks, repair as necessary.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No leaks were detected: 

      • If the system failed the leak test in step one, a leak is present but was not found during testing. Perform the system leak test found in step three over again. While performing the test verify all system connections and seal points. Inspect system lines for small cracks that may open with line movement.
