Transmission Assembly (8HP75): Notes

REMOVAL

Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to BATTERY DISCONNECT AND CONNECT .
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Drain the cooling system. Refer to FLUID/FILTER SERVICE .
Remove the transmission belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Remove the stiffening plate. Refer to PLATE, STIFFENING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Remove the front suspension skid plate. Refer to PLATE, SKID, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Remove the exhaust muffler. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Remove the rear driveshaft. Refer to REAR DRIVESHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
Remove the transfer case. Refer to MPT3015C TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION or MPT3028C TRANSFER CASE, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

Disconnect the Manual Park Release (MPR) cable end from the MPR lever.

Remove the MPR cable bracket bolts and set the MPR cable and bracket aside.
Remove the transmission dust cover bolt and dust cover.

Remove the oil pan to transmission bolts.

Remove the transmission to oil pan bolts.
Rotate the crankshaft in a clockwise direction for access through the dust cover pocket and remove the six torque converter bolts.

Remove the starter bolts and position the starter aside.

Turn the locking mechanism of the transmission wire harness connector counter-clockwise to release the lock and disconnect the transmission wire harness connector.

Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.

Disconnect the transmission vent tube.

Disconnect the Left O2 sensor wire harness connector(s).
Remove the left O2 sensor bracket nut and remove the left O2 sensor bracket from the transmission.
Disconnect the right O2 sensor wire harness connector.
Remove the right O2 sensor bracket bolt and remove the right O2 sensor bracket from the transmission.

Remove the upper bellhousing to engine stud bolts.

Remove the upper bellhousing to engine bolts.
Hold the torque converter in place during transmission removal.
Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
If necessary, remove the extension housing bolts and remove the extension housing.

INSTALLATION

Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.

CAUTION:

When supporting or lifting the transmission at the oil pan the weight of the transmission must be distributed evenly on the lifting fixture. Failure to do so could damage the oil pan and transmission.

NOTE:

If the transmission is being reconditioned (clutch/seal replacement) or replaced, it is necessary to perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST after installation. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

Apply a light coat of grease into the engine crankshaft torque converter pilot.
Verify that the transmission dowel pins are seated in engine block and protrude far enough to hold transmission in alignment.
Verify that the rubber access plugs are installed in the front of the transmission.

Install the torque converter. Verify torque converter is completely seated. Refer to TORQUE CONVERTER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
If removed or transmission was replaced, install the extension housing on the transmission.
Hold torque converter in place during transmission installation of transmission.
Rotate the torque converter to line up with the flex plate holes before the transmission is bolted to the engine.
During installation of the driveshafts, align the previously created marks on the driveshafts with the marks on the output flanges.
Perform the STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMISSION FILL AFTER SERVICE. Refer to TRANSMISSION OIL FILL AFTER SERVICE .
If the transmission is reconditioned or replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
If the valve body is replaced, program the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), MODULE PROGRAMMING .
Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
