Clutch E - Disassembly And Adjustments

CLUTCH E MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE 

  1. Place Clutch E in a suitable arbor press.
  2. (special tool #8901A, Pressing Tool), apply 200 N (45 lbf.) to the backing plate of the Clutch E.

    Using (special tool #10429, Gauge, Force) and

  3. Using a set of feeler gauges, measure the gap between the backing plate and the retainer of Clutch E.
  4. Refer to the clutch measurements table for specifications. If clearance is not within specifications, a thinner or thicker selectable backing plate can be installed to achieve proper clearance.

CLUTCH E SELECTABLE BACKING PLATES 

4.8 mm 0.188 in.
4.5 mm 0.177 in.
4.2 mm 0.165 in.
3.9 mm 0.153 in.
3.6 mm 0.141 in.
3.3 mm 0.129 in.
3.0 mm 0.118 in.

DISASSEMBLY Clutch E, depending on the transmission Julian date, may contain wave springs that sit around each friction plate.

  1. Place Clutch E in a suitable press.
  2. Using (special tool #8901A, Pressing Tool), compress the Clutch E piston enough to remove the snap ring.

  3. Remove the Clutch E piston support.

  4. Remove the Clutch E piston.
    NOTE:

    Pay attention to the orientation of the plates.

  5. Remove the Clutch E wave plate and the friction and steel plates.

  6. Remove the Clutch E backing plate.

  8. Remove the Clutch E seal and O-ring.

ASSEMBLY 

NOTE:

If the clutch discs are being replaced, soak them in 8HP transmission fluid before assembly.

  1. Install the Clutch E seal and O-ring.

  2. Install the belleville spring into the Clutch E hub.

  4. Install the Clutch E friction and steel plates, and install the wave plate.

  5. Install the Clutch E piston onto the hub.

  7. Place Clutch E in a suitable arbor press.

  8. Using (special tool #8901A, Pressing Tool) compress the Clutch E piston enough to install the snap ring.
