Diagnostic Test

TESTING LIN BUS USING THE MOPAR SCOPE 

NOTE:

Some vehicles can have multiple LIN connections within a connector, make sure that you are testing the correct LIN circuit.

For a complete LIN BUS SYSTEM wiring diagram, refer to the appropriate wiring information  .

  1. Connect the black pin for each test lead to Chassis ground. Connect the blue lead to the LIN circuit to be tested.

  2. Start the Mopar Scope.
  3. Turn the ignition on.
  4. Operate the systems connected to the LIN bus being tested to observe signal changes. Move connectors and wiring to look for any signal drop-out.
  5. When connected to the vehicle harness correctly, the LED on the breakout box will light up to indicate that there is activity on the bus.
  6. A waveform should appear.

    The image below is of a normal LIN bus waveform using the Mopar Scope.

    DESCRIPTION MEASUREMENT
    CHANNEL A 20 volts
    TIME BASE 1 ms/div [milliseconds / division control]
    ZOOM / VIEW X1 - HORIZONTAL & VERTICAL
    NOTE:

    The Mopar Scope has preset Guided Tests for Communications testing of the LIN bus.

  7. The waveform should reveal that data is being exchanged continuously along the LIN bus and the peak voltages are correct.
  8. Determine the type of LIN waveform fault (short, open, etc.) the vehicle presently has.

    Did the Mopar Scope show the LIN bus waveform fault?

    • Use the wiring diagrams as a guide to follow the path of the circuit(s) to isolate the fault further and then repair / replace as needed.
    • The condition that originally caused the concern may not be present at this time.
    • Continue to use the Mopar Scope and wiring diagrams as a guide to trace the circuits and look for any in-line connectors where the fault could occur intermittently by wiggling the wire harness and connectors.
    • Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires.
    • Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the related wire harness connectors.
    • Perform any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that may apply.


  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    NOTE:

    THIS DTC WILL SET WHEN PROXI HEATED SEATS = 1 OR PROXI HEATED SEATS = 2 OR PROXI HEATED STEERING WHEEL =1

    With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.

    1. With the scan tool, run a vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
    2. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    3. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    6. With the scan tool, read HVAC Module DTCs.

    Did the DTC return?

    Yes 

    • Go To  2

    No 

  2. PERFORM THE APPROPRIATE HVAC ACTUATOR CALIBRATION / AUTO ADDRESSING ROUTINE TEST AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN 
    NOTE:

    NO HVAC mode or temp functions will perform as desired unless auto-addressing was successful. 

    NOTE:

    NO Heated/Vented Seats functions will operate unless auto-addressing was successful. 

    NOTE:

    Auto-addressing needs to be done every time a CSM/CSWSM/CRSM or an Actuator is replaced. 

    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair all LIN Bus related DTC's before performing this test procedure. 

    With the scan tool, perform the appropriate HVAC Actuator Calibration/Auto Addressing Routine and recheck DTCs.

    Did any of the above test routines fail?

    Yes 

    • Replace the faulty component that failed the HVAC Actuator Calibration/Auto Addressing Routine and or LIN issue in Accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

  3. DISCONNECT THE COMFORT STEERING WHEEL SURFACE MODULE HARNESS CONNECTOR - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK THE DTC STATUS 
    1. Determine if the vehicle is equipped with a Comfort Steering Wheel Surface Module.
    2. Turn the ignition off.
    3. Disconnect the component harness connector(s) containing the circuit being tested.
    4. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    5. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    6. Turn the ignition on.
    7. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    8. With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs.

    Did the DTC status change from Active to Stored?

    Yes 

    • Replace the Comfort Steering Wheel Surface Module in accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

    • Go To  4
  4. DISCONNECT THE RIGHT FRONT COMFORT SEAT MODULE HARNESS CONNECTOR - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK THE DTC STATUS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the component harness connector(s) containing the circuit being tested.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs.

    Did the DTC status change from Active to Stored?

    Yes 

    • Replace the Right Front Comfort Seat Module in accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

    • Go To  5
  5. DISCONNECT THE LEFT FRONT COMFORT SEAT MODULE HARNESS CONNECTOR - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK THE DTC STATUS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the component harness connector(s) containing the circuit being tested.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs.

    Did the DTC status change from Active to Stored?

    Yes 

    • Replace the Left Front Comfort Seat Module in accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

    • Go To  6
  6. DISCONNECT THE LEFT REAR COMFORT SEAT MODULE HARNESS CONNECTOR - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK THE DTC STATUS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the component harness connector(s) containing the circuit being tested.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs.

    Did the DTC status change from Active to Stored?

    Yes 

    • Replace the Left Rear Comfort Seat Module in accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

    • Go To  7
  7. DISCONNECT THE RIGHT REAR COMFORT SEAT MODULE HARNESS CONNECTOR - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK THE DTC STATUS 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the component harness connector(s) containing the circuit being tested.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read HVAC DTCs.

    Did the DTC status change from Active to Stored?

    Yes 

    • Replace the Right Rear Comfort Seat Module in accordance with the Service Information.
    • Perform the HVAC VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HVAC VERIFICATION TEST .

    No 

    • Go To  8
  8. DISCONNECT RELATED MODULE HARNESS CONNECTIONS AND INSPECT FOR PROBLEMS 
    1. Disconnect all BCM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Connect all BCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read BCM DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
