Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR THE DTC TO RETURN
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL CIRCUIT RESISTANCE AT THE COMFORT SEAT WHEEL SURFACE MODULE (CSWSM) HARNESS CONNECTOR NOTE:
DIAGNOSE AND REPAIR ALL LIN BUS RELATED DTC'S BEFORE PERFORMING THIS TEST PROCEDURE
Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Disconnect the CSWSM harness connector.
- Measure the resistance between the (C91) Power Supply circuit and the (C986) Return circuit at the CSWSM harness connector.
Is the resistance 1.45 Ohms ±10% for a leather steering wheel or 1.37 Ohms ±10% for a leather and wood combination steering wheel?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL CIRCUIT RESISTANCE AT THE STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE C1 COMPONENT CONNECTOR WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the SCCM C1 harness connector.
- Before proceeding, thoroughly inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the CSWSM and the SCCM. Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals and repair or replace as necessary.
- Measure the resistance between the (C91) Power Supply circuit and the (C986) Return circuit at the SCCM C1 component connector.
Is the resistance 1.45 Ohms ±10% for a leather steering wheel or 1.37 Ohms ±10% for a leather and wood combination steering wheel?
Yes
- Repair the (C91) Power Supply circuit or the (C986) Return circuit for an open, high resistance or shorted condition.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL CIRCUIT RESISTANCE AT THE STEERING COLUMN CONTROL MODULE C4 CONNECTOR WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Remove the Driver Airbag in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to AIR BAG, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) C4 harness connector.
- Before proceeding, thoroughly inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Heated Steering Wheel (HSW) and the Steering Column Control Module. Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals and repair or replace as necessary.
- Measure the resistance between the (C91) Power Supply circuit and the (C986) Return circuit at the SCCM C4 harness connector.
Is the resistance 1.45 Ohms ±10% for a leather steering wheel or 1.37 Ohms ±10% for a leather and wood combination steering wheel?
Yes
- Replace the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, STEERING COLUMN CONTROL (SCCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Heated Steering Wheel (HSW) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect all CSWSM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all CSWSM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read CSWSM DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Replace the Comfort Seat Wheel Surface Module (CSWSM) in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repairing the wiring harness or connections corrected the problem.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
