Diagnosing The Starting System For A No Crank Condition

NOTE:

The diagnostics below are written assuming that the battery has been checked and passed as good, and not contributing to the no crank condition.

When diagnosing a no crank condition, perform the following:

  1. If the vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission, verify that the clutch pedal switch or position sensor is functioning properly.
    1. If the clutch pedal switch/sensor is suspect, test and adjust or replace switch/sensor if required.
    2. If the clutch pedal switch/sensor is functioning properly, continue to step 2  .
  2. Verify that there are no security module or key fob/skim key faults present.
    1. If security module or key faults are present, diagnose the fault before continuing.
    2. Security module or key faults are not present, continue to step 3  .
  3. Verify that there are no Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) faults and the shifter position is reading correctly.
    1. If faults are present or shifter is not showing in Park/Neutral, diagnose the fault or correct the shifter position before continuing.
    2. No faults are not present and shifter position is correct, continue to step 4  .
  4. Use the wiring information to determine if the vehicle being tested has an ignition crank sense circuit connected to starter relay output circuit inside the PDC. This circuit is monitored by the PCM for diagnostic purposes. The PCM expects to detect voltage on the circuit when the engine starter engagement is initiated (cranking). If the engine does not crank when commanded, and the feedback circuit performance fault IS NOT present in the PCM, it would indicate that the fuse and relays are most likely good.
    1. If the vehicle has an ignition crank sense circuit continue to the TESTING FOR A NO CRANK CONDITION ON A VEHICLE WITH AN IGNITION CRANK SENSE CIRCUIT diagnostic service information below.
    2. If the vehicle does not have an ignition crank sense circuit, continue to the TESTING FOR A NO CRANK CONDITION ON A VEHICLE THAT DOES NOT HAVE AN IGNITION CRANK SENSE CIRCUIT diagnostic service information below.
