Left Exhaust Manifold: Notes

REMOVAL 

1. Remove the catalytic converter assembly. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
2. Remove the left front wheelhouse splash shield. Refer to SHIELD, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

   2 - Oil Level Indicator Tube Bolt

3. Remove the oil level indicator tube nut and position aside the oil level indicator tube nut.

   1 - Exhaust Manifold Heat Shield

4. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield nuts and the exhaust manifold head shield and bracket.
5. Lock the steering wheel to prevent it from turning.

   1 - Intermediate Shaft Upper Pinch Bolt

6. Remove and DISCARD  the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
7. Separate the intermediate shaft from steering column and position aside.
8. Disconnect the left upstream Oxygen (O2) sensor wire harness connector.

   NOTE:

   All fasteners removed must be installed in the same location they were removed from.

9. Using the sequence shown in the illustration, remove the exhaust manifold bolts and the exhaust manifold.
10. Remove the exhaust manifold gasket.
11. Clean the mating surfaces.

INSPECTION AND CLEANING 

Cleaning

• Clean mating surfaces on cylinder head and manifold. Wash with solvent and blow dry with compressed air. Make sure all gasket mating surfaces are clean and free of any debris.

Inspection

• Inspect exhaust manifold for cracks or any type of damage.
• Inspect mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold for flatness with a straight edge. Gasket surfaces must be flat within 0.2 mm per 300 mm (0.008 inch per foot).

INSTALLATION 

Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.

• All fasteners removed must be installed in the same location from where they were removed.
• Position a NEW  exhaust manifold gasket and the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head.
• The left exhaust manifold bolts must be tightened in the sequence shown in the torque table below.
• Re-check the torque for the exhaust manifold bolts.
• Start the engine and check for leaks.
