Coolant Air Evacuation

WARNING:

ANTIFREEZE IS AN ETHYLENE GLYCOL BASE COOLANT AND IS HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED. IF SWALLOWED, DRINK TWO GLASSES OF WATER AND INDUCE VOMITING. IF INHALED, MOVE TO FRESH AIR AREA. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT STORE IN OPEN OR UNMARKED CONTAINERS. WASH SKIN AND CLOTHING THOROUGHLY AFTER COMING IN CONTACT WITH ETHYLENE GLYCOL. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DISPOSE OF GLYCOL BASED COOLANT PROPERLY. CONTACT YOUR DEALER OR GOVERNMENT AGENCY FOR LOCATION OF COLLECTION CENTER IN YOUR AREA. DO NOT OPEN A COOLING SYSTEM WHEN THE ENGINE IS AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE OR HOT UNDER PRESSURE; PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT. AVOID RADIATOR COOLING FAN WHEN ENGINE COMPARTMENT RELATED SERVICE IS PERFORMED; PERSONAL INJURY CAN RESULT.

WARNING:

WEAR APPROPRIATE EYE AND HAND PROTECTION WHEN PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.

CAUTION:

Failure to purge air from the cooling system can result in an overheating condition and severe engine damage.

CAUTION:

DO NOT proceed with the recovery or vacuum phases if the pressures are already zero. Danger of polluting the recharging station with engine coolant along with damage to it may occur.

Evacuating or purging air from the cooling system involves the use of a pressurized air operated vacuum generator. The vacuum created allows for a quick and complete coolant refilling while removing any air pockets present in the system components.

NOTE:

The service area where this procedure is performed should have a minimum shop air requirement of 80 psi (5.5 bar) and should be equipped with an air dryer system.

NOTE:

For best results, the radiator should be empty. The vehicle's climate control system should be switched off to prevent cooling fan operation.

  1. Fit the 2048900070 tool (1a) on the engine coolant reservoir and connect the quick coupling (1a) to a pressurized air source.
  2. Connect the intake pipe (2a) to a container of coolant and the drain pipe (2b) to a container to recover it.
  3. Make sure that the valves are closed.

  4. Open the valve (1a) and start flushing the cooling circuit; the surplus coolant drains out through the hose (1b).
  5. The evacuation process is complete when the pressure stabilizes between 0 and 0.1 bar (0 and 1.5 psi), in the green part of the pressure gauge scale (2a); close the valve (1a).

  6. Open the valve (1a) and wait until the engine coolant reservoir is full to the brim and check that the pressure returns to 1 bar (14.5 psi) on the pressure gauge (1b), then close the valve (1a) and remove the equipment.
    NOTE:

There is a dirt trap filter (2b) on the end of the intake pipe (2a). When filling the system, always make sure that it is completely immersed in the coolant, so that air is not drawn in.

    NOTE:

If air is sucked up while filling, it is necessary to repeat the coolant air evacuation procedure.

  7. Install the cap on the coolant reservoir.
  8. Start the engine and let it idle for about 2 minutes.
  9. Remove the air from the circuit by carrying out periodic, gradual acceleration (every 30 seconds) until a speed of about 3000 rpm is reached.
    NOTE:

This operation should be carried out until the thermostat opens and the fan switches on and off at least three times.

  10. During this operation, keep the climate control system switched off to prevent the fan coming on not due to the heating of the coolant. If there is a noticeable drop in the level in the tank at this point, restore the idle speed and open the cap very carefully and top up the coolant to the MAX level; then close the cap fully and complete the removal of the air.

  11. Stop the engine and allow it to cool down. Check that the coolant level is by the MAX line on the engine coolant reservoir. In case of excess level, drain the coolant to reach the MAX line. If the level is low, add coolant to reach the MAX line.
