Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. With the scan tool, run a Vehicle Scan Report (VSR), or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Did the DTC return?

    Yes 

    • Go To  2

    No 

  2. CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) FOR ENGINE SPEED RELATED DTCS 
    1. Using the DTCs recorded in step 1, check for any engine speed related DTCs.

      Are any engine speed DTCs present?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM CONTROL MODULE (BSCM) FOR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR OR TIRE SIZE RELATED DTCS 
    1. Using the DTCs recorded in step 1, check for any wheel speed or tire size related DTCs.

      Are any wheel speed or tire size DTCs present?

      Yes 

      • Diagnose and repair the BSCM DTCs in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC CODE INDEX .

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE BODY CONTROL MODULE (BCM) CONFIGURATION 
    NOTE:

    The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) of the Body Control Module (BCM) must match the vehicles VIN.

    NOTE:

    There is some variation in tire circumference depending on inflation pressure and amount of tire wear. A properly inflated tire circumference should typically be within 6 mm (0.250 in) of the Dynamic Tire Circumference stored in the BCM.

    1. With the scan tool, run a vehicle configuration report.
    2. Measure the tire circumference.
    3. Compare the measured tire circumference to the Dynamic Tire Circumference stored in the BCM.

      Does the tire circumference on the vehicle closely match the Dynamic Tire Circumference stored in the BCM?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Correct the Dynamic Tire Circumference stored in the BCM or install the correct tires for the vehicle.
      • Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK IF TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) SOFTWARE UPDATE IS AVAILABLE 
    NOTE:

    Read Service Bulletins to determine if the software update is applicable to the customer complaint.

    1. With the scan tool, check if a TCM software update is available that may be related to the customer complaint.

      Is an update available?

      Yes 

      • Refer to  6.

      No 

      • Refer to  7.
  6. PROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) 
    1. Perform the TCM PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE. Refer to MODULE PROGRAMMING .
    2. Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .

      Were you able to successfully program the TCM and pass the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST?

      Yes 

      • Test Complete.

      No 

      • Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector and all related in-line connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
      • Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK TRANSMISSION FOR INTERNAL FAILURE 
    1. Remove the Transmission Oil Pan in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to TRANSMISSION AND TRANSFER CASE/AUTOMATIC/STANDARD PROCEDURE .
    2. Inspect for excessive debris such as clutch friction material or metal contamination that indicates an internal transmission failure.

      Is there any indication of an internal Transmission failure?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector and all related in-line connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
      • Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
