Diagnostic Test

- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN NOTE:
With the scan tool, read Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTCs and record the Event and Environmental Data on the repair order as it may be needed to determine the root cause of this DTC. It may be very difficult to reset this DTC so this step is very important.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- With the scan tool, run a vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE PADDLE SWITCH CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the paddle switches.
- Connect the negative lead of a DVOM to the (T831) return circuit and the positive lead to the (T830) Signal circuit. Test at both switches.
- Turn the ignition to the Run position.
What is the result?
There is 4.77 to 4.999 volts present.
- Go To 3
There is less than 4.77 volts present.
- Go To 4
There is greater than 5.0 volts present.
- Go To 7
- CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE PADDLE SWITCHES
- Disconnect both paddle switches.
- Using a DVOM, measure the resistance across each paddle switch, compare the measurements with the values in the table:
Right Switch (+) Released 21.870 k Ω - 26.730 k Ω Right Switch (+) Pressed 1.080 k Ω - 1.320 k Ω Left Switch (-) Released 21.870 k Ω - 26.730 k Ω Left Switch (-) Pressed 1.800 k Ω - 2.200 k Ω Do the switch resistance values match what is in the table?
Yes
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) terminals and connectors for corrosion, damage or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the TCM. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the out of range Paddle Switch in accordance with Service Information.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (T830) SIGNAL CIRCUIT VOLTAGE
- CHECK THE (T831) RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the TCM harness connector.
- Disconnect the Paddle Switch connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (T831) Return circuit.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the (T831) Return circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (T830) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the TCM harness connector.
- Disconnect the Paddle Switch connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (T830) Signal circuit.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) terminals and connectors for corrosion, damage or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the TCM. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repair the (T830) Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (T830) SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the TCM harness connector.
- Disconnect the Paddle Switch connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (T830) Signal circuit and all other circuit at the TCM harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (T830) Signal circuit and any other circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (T830) Signal circuit for a short to another circuit.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- CHECK THE (T831) SIGNAL RETURN FOR A SHORT TO BATTERY
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the TCM harness connector.
- Disconnect the Paddle Switch connector.
- Measure the resistance of the (T831) Return circuit and all other circuit at the TCM harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (T831) Return circuit and any other circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (T831) Return circuit for a short to another circuit.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) terminals and connectors for corrosion, damage or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace the TCM. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
