Functional Description - Electric Motor

DESCRIPTION:
The high voltage Electric Motor (P2) resides in the bellhousing. The Separation Clutch (K0) is contained in the Electric Motor. High voltage power is supplied through a dedicated connector located at the lower right side of the transmission bellhousing. The Electric Motor must not exceed a calibrated temperature threshold during operation. The Electric Motor Temperature Sensor monitors the output temperature of the cooling fluid. The precise position of the Electric Motor rotor is monitored by the Resolver which is housed in the transmission and connected to the rotor and stator of the Electric Motor.

- functions as a generator during regenerative braking.
- is not a serviceable component, if service is required, the transmission assembly must be replaced.
The Electric Motor:
- is a multi disc wet clutch that resides within the Electric Motor.
- can couple or decouple the Electric Motor from the combustion engine.
- is engaged when combustion engine is supplying torque.
- is engaged when operating in Parallel Mode, in this mode the combustion engine and the Electric Motor work together to supply torque to the transmission.
- is disengaged when operating in Series Mode, in this mode the Electric Motor is supplying torque to the transmission.
- is controlled by the TCM. By controlling the rate that hydraulic pressure is applied until torque transfer begins allows for smooth engagement.
- is not a serviceable component, if service is required, the transmission assembly must be replaced.
The Separation Clutch (K0):
- is located externally at the top of the transmission bellhousing.
- is a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) sensor, meaning as the temperature rises the resistance of the sensor.
- signal is compared with is compared with a calculated temperature model. If the temperature approaches the maximum permissible temperature, the Electric Motor output will be reduced.
- is a serviceable component.
The Motor Temperature Sensor:
- resides within the Electric Motor.
- harness connector is located externally at the top of the transmission bellhousing.
- monitors the precise position of the rotor so the voltage in the coils of the stator can be correctly calculated and generated.
- calculates the rotor position angle by evaluating the phase voltages induced by the rotation of the rotor in the stator coils.
- also provides rotor speed signal.
- external harness connector housing is the only serviceable component of the Resolver, if any other service is required, the transmission assembly must be replaced.
