Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    WARNING:

    On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, you must thoroughly read and follow all High Voltage Safety procedures. In addition, before performing any diagnostic or service procedure near a high voltage component, you must perform the High Voltage Power Down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    Read the HIGH-VOLTAGE SAFETY PROCEDURES. Refer to  HIGH VOLTAGE SAFETY PROCEDURES 

    When the HIGH-VOLTAGE POWER-DOWN PROCEDURE is necessary. Refer to  HIGH VOLTAGE POWER DOWN  . 

    1. With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
    2. For future reference, with the scan tool, run and save a vehicle Scan Report and all related recorded data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
    4. Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
    5. Turn the ignition on.
    6. Using the When Monitored and Set Conditions above and recorded data, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    7. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

    Did the DTC return?

    Yes 

    • Go To  2

    No 

  2. INSPECT THE LOW TEMP COOLING LOOP FOR CONCERNS 
    WARNING:

    On vehicles equipped with the high voltage system, you must thoroughly read and follow all High Voltage Safety procedures. In addition, before performing any diagnostic or service procedure near a high voltage component, you must perform the High Voltage Power Down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    Read the HIGH-VOLTAGE SAFETY PROCEDURES. Refer to  HIGH VOLTAGE SAFETY PROCEDURES 

    When the HIGH-VOLTAGE POWER-DOWN PROCEDURE is necessary. Refer to  HIGH VOLTAGE POWER DOWN  . 

    1. Inspect the Low Temp Cooling Loop for overheating problems.
    2. Check the PCM and HCP for related cooling system DTCs.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE 
    1. Disconnect the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance between the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit and the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit at the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) interface connector (MGU side).
    3. Using the chart above, compare the Temperature Sensor temperature (as indirectly indicated with the recorded MGU temperature reading) to the correlating resistance value.

      Is the resistance within the specified range when the sensor is at the given temperature?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

  4. CHECK THE TEMPERATURE SENSOR FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit at the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) interface connector (MGU side).
    2. Check for continuity between ground and the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit at the Motor Generator Unit (MGU) interface connector (MGU side).

      Is there continuity between ground and the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit or the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Disconnect the PIM C1 harness connector.
    2. Measure the resistance of the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit between the MGU harness connector and the PIM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit between the MGU harness connector and the PIM C1 harness connector.

      Is the resistance for both circuits below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Repair the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit or the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the Hybrid Control Processor (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HYBRID CONTROL PROCESSOR (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Check for continuity between ground and the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit at the PIM C1 harness connector.
    2. Check for continuity between ground and the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit at the PIM C1 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and either one of the circuits?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit or the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the Hybrid Control Processor (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HYBRID CONTROL PROCESSOR (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. Measure the voltage on the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit at the PIM C1 harness connector.
    3. Measure the voltage on the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit at the PIM C1 harness connector.

      Is there any voltage present on either circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit or the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit for a short to voltage.
      • Perform the Hybrid Control Processor (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HYBRID CONTROL PROCESSOR (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO ANOTHER CIRCUIT 
    1. Check for continuity between the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit and all other circuits at the PIM C1 harness connector.
    2. Check for continuity between the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit and all other circuits at the PIM C1 harness connector.

      Is there continuity between the either circuit and any other circuit?

      Yes 

      • Repair the (T366) Motor A Temperature Sensor Signal circuit or the (T359) Motor A Temperature Sensor Return circuit for a short to another circuit.
      • Perform the Hybrid Control Processor (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to HYBRID CONTROL PROCESSOR (HCP) VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  9
  9. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all PIM harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all PIM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    9. Using the recorded data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    10. With the scan tool, read HCP DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      No
