Fuel Delivery System
DESCRIPTION
The fuel delivery system is made up of the following:

OPERATION: Fuel is picked up in the fuel tank by the fuel pump module. This module is located inside of the fuel tank. A fuel return system is provided within the fuel pump module using check valves. A separate fuel return line from the engine to the tank is not used. The fuel pressure regulator and the main fuel filter are combined within the fuel pump module. There is no fuel filler cap on this vehicle, it is equipped with a cap-less fuel system.

The fuel gauge sending unit is attached to the side of the fuel pump module. The fuel gauge sending unit consists of a float arm and a variable resistor track (card).

The fuel pump control module is mounted inside the right rear wheel well. The fuel pump control module is responsible for supply and regulation of voltage to the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump.

The fuel pump module is mounted inside the fuel tank and contains the following components:
- Mounting flange
- Electric fuel pump
- Fuel pump reservoir
- Inlet strainer
- Fuel pressure regulator
- Fuel level sending unit
- Fuel filter
- Fuel control module
The fuel pump activation is managed by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through the fuel pump relay in the Power Distribution Center (PDC). The control module is integrated onto the fuel pump assembly. The fuel control module is not serviced separately. The module is a smart device but has no communication with the PCM. It operates in accordance with a preset calibration. Initially the pressure is approximately 4.5 bar (63 psi) for about 0.5 seconds, then regulates at 4 bar (58 psi) normally with no faults present. The fuel pump module has its own internal pressure sensor and temperature sensor and performs its own diagnostics on the internal components. If the fuel control module detects a fault, it will default to max pressure (100%) 4.5 bar (63-65 psi). The pump can operate at the max pressure indefinitely without any driveability issues. The PCM will compensate for the higher than normal fuel pressure. The fuel level sending unit is the only serviceable component of the fuel pump module. If the electric fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator or fuel filter requires service, the fuel pump module must be replaced as an assembly.

The fuel rail supplies the necessary fuel to each individual fuel injector. High pressure from the fuel pump is routed to the fuel rail. The fuel rail then supplies the necessary fuel to each individual fuel injector. The fuel rail is a composite design. The four fuel rail fasteners thread directly into the composite intake manifold and are a self-tapping design. The intake manifold can be serviced without removing the fuel injector rail. The fuel rail and fuel injectors must be installed into the intake manifold as an assembly. Do not attempt to install the fuel rail when the injectors are in the manifold. Always install new O-rings on the fuel injectors. A quick-connect fitting with a safety latch clip is used to attach the fuel line to the fuel rail. The fuel rail is not repairable.

The fuel tank is constructed of a plastic material. The main functions are for fuel storage and for placement of the fuel pump module. The fuel tank is equipped with fuel and vapor controls that assist the vehicle to pass a full 360° rollover without fuel leakage. The Onboard Refueling Vapor Recovery Valve (ORVR) manages the flow of vapor during refueling. It also controls maximum fuel volume of the fuel tank.

A fuel tank filler tube is secured to the fuel tank and extends to a position proximate a wall of the vehicle body and provides a fuel delivery passage to the fuel tank as well as provides separate liquid and vapor paths from the tank. The filler tube does not require a fuel cap, it is equipped with a cap-less refueling unit.
