Driveshaft & Universal Joints: Driveshaft: Removal

CAUTION:

Driveshaft removal is a two-person operation. Never allow driveshaft to hang from the center bearing, or while only connected to power transfer unit (PTU) or rear driveline module flanges. A helper is required. If a propshaft section is hung unsupported, damage may occur to the joint, boot, and center bearing from over-angulation. This may result in driveline vibrations.

Place transmission in neutral.
Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .

Using a long piece of wood or similar, fasten it to the driveshaft with several cable ties in order to keep the driveshaft from over-articulating during removal and installation.

Apply index marks (3) on the rear pinion flange and the rear driveshaft flange.
NOTE:
Be sure a helper is holding the driveshaft in place.
Remove and discard the driveshaft bolts (1) at the rear pinion flange.

Remove the front center bearing bolts (1).

Remove the rear center bearing bolts (1).

Slide the driveshaft (1) off the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) and remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
