Excessive Exhaust System Noise

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION
EXCESSIVE EXHAUST NOISE (UNDER HOOD) 1. Turbocharger housing cracked or broken. 1. Replace the turbocharger.
2. Turbocharger to cylinder head leak. 2. Tighten the turbocharger and/or replace the gasket.
3. EGR Valve to manifold gasket leakage. 3. Tighten the fasteners or replace the gasket.
4. EGR tube leakage. 4. Tighten the fasteners or replace the gasket.
5. Cracked or catalytic converter housing or flange. 5. Replace the catalytic converter assembly.
EXCESSIVE EXHAUST NOISE 1. Leak at exhaust pipe joints. 1. Tighten the clamps at leaking joints.
2. Burned or rusted out exhaust pipe or muffler assembly. 2. Replace the exhaust pipe or the muffler assembly.
3. Burned or rusted out exhaust resonator. 3. Replace the exhaust resonator assembly.
4. Restriction in exhaust system. 4. Perform the Exhaust System Restriction Check. Replace defective component as necessary.
5. Converter material in muffler. 5. Replace muffler and converter assemblies. Check fuel injection and ignition systems for proper operation.
