Clutch Pedal Interlock Switch - Diagnosis And Testing

The Clutch Pedal Interlock Switch consists of two open or closed style switches.

When the switch lever is at the rearward end of its swing (pedal released) the downstop or interlock switch is open and should not have continuity through the connector pins 1 and 2. The upstop switch is closed and should have continuity between pins 1 and 3.

When the switch lever is at the forward end of its swing (pedal depressed) the downstop or interlock switch is closed and should have continuity through the connector pins 1 and 2. The upstop switch is open and should not have continuity between pins 1 and 3.

To test the switch, unplug the wire harness connector and connect a continuity tester or OHM meter to the pins in the switch connector.

SYMPTOM  TEST RESULT  REPAIR 
Engine will not crank with clutch depressed. 
  1. No continuity is detected from pin 1 to pin 2 or continuity is detected from pin 1 to pin 3 with clutch pedal depressed.
  2. If switch tests OK with the clutch pedal depressed.
  1. Switch needs to be replaced.
  2. Repair electrical fault in system.
Engine cranks with clutch released. 
  1. Continuity is detected from pin 1 to pin 2 or no continuity is detected from pin 1 to pin 2 with clutch pedal depressed.
  2. If switch tests OK with the clutch pedal depressed.
  1. Switch needs to be replaced.
  2. Repair electrical fault in system.
