Engine Timing Verification

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.

CRANKSHAFT ALIGNMENT - 60 DEGREES AFTER TDC

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable(s). Refer to 3.0L, BATTERY DISCONNECT & CONNECT - DUAL 12 VOLT BATTERY SYSTEM .

1 - Vibration Dampener Cover Nuts
    2 - Vibration Dampener Cover
3 - Vibration Dampener Cover Bolts
  2. Remove the vibration dampener cover nuts, vibration dampener cover bolts and the vibration dampener cover.

    1 - Timing Mark
  3. Rotate the engine until timing mark on the crankshaft is at the 12 O'clock position, (this is 60° ATDC).
  4. Remove the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Refer to ENGINE SENSORS, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    1 - Reluctor Wheel
  5. Observe the location of the reluctor wheel. If the view matches the illustration the engine is correctly timed, proceed to step 7. If the view is different than the view in the illustration, go to the next step.

    1 - Reluctor Wheel
  6. If you see this view of the reluctor wheel the engine is 180° off time.
  7. Install the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor. Refer to ENGINE SENSORS, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

    1 - Engine Block Plug
  8. Remove the engine block plug.

    1 - Crankshaft Timing Tool
  9. Install the (special tool #VM.10339, Tool, Crankshaft Timing) into the starter side of the engine block. If the Crankshaft Locking Tool does not fully go into the engine block and stops short, the engine is not properly set to 60° ATDC. Rotate the engine so the Crankshaft Locking Tool fully engages into engine block and crankshaft. Once fully engaged, thread tool into engine block and install the bolt. The crankshaft is now set at 60° ATDC.

CAMSHAFT ALIGNMENT

The following tool are required for timing alignment of the camshafts.

NOTE:

This procedure is being shown in illustration on the left side cylinder head. The right side is similar.

  1. The crankshaft should be locked at 60° ATDC prior to timing camshafts.

1 - Intake Camshaft Gear Timing Mark
2 - Exhaust Camshaft Timing Gear Mark
  2. The intake camshaft gear timing mark should be at the four O'clock position and the exhaust camshaft timing gear mark should be at the eight O'clock position.

    1 - Camshaft Gear Dots
  3. Rotate the camshafts to line up the three camshaft gear dots and install the left camshaft alignment tool.

1 - Left Camshaft Alignment Tool
  4. If the left camshaft alignment tool locking pins don't align up and fit into the holes on the camshaft gears then the camshafts are not timed properly.

FUEL INJECTION PUMP TIMING

With the engine at base timing align the fuel injection pump as described below.

NOTE:

If only the fuel injection pump is being replaced. Refer to ASSEMBLY, FUEL PUMP, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
