Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN NOTE:
Diagnose communication DTCs before proceeding. If no communication DTCs are set, diagnose Antilock Brake System (ABS) DTCs before proceeding.
NOTE:This DTC can set due to differences in tire diameter. Check tire diameters to make sure the tires are the same size.
NOTE:This DTC can set due to wheel spin.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs in all Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and record on the repair order.
- With the scan tool, run a vehicle Scan Report, or record the Environmental Data related to the DTCs.
- With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off for a minimum of 10.0 seconds.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data and the When Monitored Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- VISUAL INSPECTION NOTE:
This DTC can set due to differences in tire diameter.
NOTE:This DTC may set on a hard acceleration on loose gravel or during other off road driving conditions.
- Check all of the tires for the correct pressure.
- Check tire wear on all the tires.
- Check that all tire sizes are the same.
- Ask the customer what the road and driving conditions were like when the fault set.
Were any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary. If the DTC set during a front or rear wheel spin condition, no repair is necessary.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- VEHICLE SPEED RELATED DTCS
- Using the DTC data recorded earlier, check for vehicle speed related DTCs.
- Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were any vehicle speed related DTCs present?
Yes
- Perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure in accordance with the Service Information.
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK IF TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM) SOFTWARE UPDATE IS AVAILABLE NOTE:
Read Service Bulletins to determine if the software update is applicable to the customer complaint.
- PROGRAM THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM)
- Perform the TCM PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE. Refer to MODULE PROGRAMMING .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST
.
Were you able to successfully program the TCM and pass the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST?
Yes
- Test Complete.
No
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector and all related in-line connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM assembly in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL
- Check the transmission fluid level in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CHECK FLUID LEVEL
.
Is the transmission fluid level correct?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Correct the transmission oil level.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
- Check the transmission fluid level in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CHECK FLUID LEVEL
.
- INSPECT THE OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR
- Remove the Transmission Oil Pan in accordance with the Service Information.NOTE:
If excessive debris is found in the Transmission Oil Pan, correct the cause of the debris before proceeding with this Diagnostic Test.
- If equipped, remove the Hydraulic Impulse Solenoid (HIS).
- Visually inspect the Output Speed Senor for proper installation.
Is the Output Speed Sensor properly installed?
Yes
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector and all related in-line connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 8
- Remove the Transmission Oil Pan in accordance with the Service Information.
- CHECK OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR FOR DAMAGE
- Carefully remove the Output Speed Sensor from the transmission case.
- Inspect the Output Speed Sensor for any visible damage.
Is there any damage to the Output Speed Sensor?
Yes
- Using the schematics as a guide, check the Transmission Control Module (TCM) connector and all related in-line connector terminals for corrosion, damage, or pushed out terminals. Pay particular attention to the power and ground circuits. If no problems are found, replace and program the TCM in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, TRANSMISSION CONTROL (TCM), REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Properly install the Output Speed sensor in accordance with the Service Information.
- Perform the TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to 8HP50/850RE TRANSMISSION VERIFICATION TEST .
